Ramps. When many of us envision an accessible playground, we think: ramps. While ramps can be an excellent way to create an accessible route from the ground to an elevated play component (much better than a transfer station with stairs), we must really think about the flow of a play space and the enjoyment factor for all users. So often, we see "accessible playgrounds" designed with ramps to nowhere. This might mean a ramp leads right to the bottom of a set of stairs. It might also mean that a ramp leads to nowhere in particular - perhaps just another ground level access point - with a play panel or two on the way. What is the play value there? Not only can ramps create a costly addition to any budget, they certainly lack the fun factor. When we designed and built Julia's Junction, we created a ground-based concept to welcome all ages and abilities. Everyone who visits Julia's Junction can access almost everything via the unitary surfacing throughout. Some components require a transfer, some are accessible for a wheelchair without a need to transfer (this is important, by the way, as several wheelchair users are unable to leave their chair). I challenge you to think creatively about designing your inclusive playground. I encourage you to go beyond the basic requirements for an "accessible playground" according to government standards. Take the time to engage playground users with a variety of disabilities and envision a space that is not only accessible, but FUN for everyone. Outdoor Labs Where once there were two fenced areas with the usual games of a common playground, now there is the "Outdoor Labs" project: an innovative space, created specifically for the Istituto Marymount Roma to enhance the educational design of outdoor spaces. The idea was born from the desire to give educational meaning to a space otherwise used only for recreational purposes that offered little in terms of learning, exploration and discovery. Here, every detail has been thought out and designed to ensure the creative expression of children, using sensoriality as a privileged channel for learning. The entire area is organized into different centers of interest within which there are specific materials and equipment. Children freely choose the activity, using the materials and equipment equally freely. There are no ready-made toys or games, everything is to be experimented with, conceived, designed and created! Nothing is static, but everything is in progress. Children become co-designers and actively participate in building different meanings of being outdoors each time. Vare Recreation Center in Grays Ferry recently celebrated the ribbon-cutting and grand opening of its $21 million renovation project. This transformative revitalization, completed in partnership with Rebuild Philadelphia and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, was made possible through the support of former Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, Council President Kenyatta Johnson, State Representative Jordan Harris, the Rosenthal Foundation, the Philadelphia Eagles, and many others. The newly renovated 18,700-square-foot Vare Recreation Center features a 7,000-square-foot indoor basketball gymnasium with spectator seating, a 4,900-square-foot gymnastics gym outfitted with state-of-the-art athletic equipment, and a 900-square-foot multipurpose room that can be divided into two classrooms. Additional amenities include a computer lab with high-speed fiber optic internet, two new outdoor basketball courts, a sprayground, a 1,500-square-foot outdoor plaza and performance space, and a 6,000-square-foot playground with play structures for children of all ages. A regulation-sized synthetic turf field is also set to be installed in spring 2025. Playgrounds haven’t changed much since World War II… so how do we stay innovative? I’ve been in the playground industry for 17 years, and I’ve seen countless product releases, both from our own brands and from competitors. Recently, a large commercial client asked me, “How do you innovate?” I’m not one to hold back. I told them, “Here’s the reality: we’re still all creating playgrounds based on the same elements that kids have played on for generations: slides, see-saws, merry-go-rounds, overhead climbers. We take these basic elements and integrate them into new designs to keep play exciting and functional.” And you know what? I love it. I love what our industry is doing. I love the creativity and the challenge of finding new ways to engage kids. But not every new release is groundbreaking. People often chase the “next big swing,” but it’s still a swing. At NVB Playgrounds, Inc. we design custom playgrounds that make statements, like a giant jellyfish that sits 20 feet in the air. ?? These projects help communities stand out and add real value to neighborhoods and businesses. They inspire, but they can also be out of reach for many budgets. That’s why I also focus on innovation that balances imagination with affordability. We’re competing with screens and need to make playgrounds that are challenging, entertaining, and truly developmental for kids. When I see a new release, I always wonder, “What’s different this time?” Often, it’s just another slide. And that’s okay, every industry has its standards. Growing up in the clothing industry, I watched the same patterns come back every few years. Plaid one year, pastels the next. In 15 years, they’ll sell us bell bottoms again and act like they’re brand new. ?? Golf? It’s all about getting that “extra 10 yards” with the latest driver. But that doesn’t stop us from trying to be different. We bring color, creativity, and new textures into our designs. Success, for me, is when someone sees our work and says, “Hmm, I haven’t seen that before.” Look at dog parks, they haven’t changed much since the community decided they needed a dedicated park. So how do you make a picnic table exciting? You shape it like a paw, make it fun, add six seats. ?? Simple, different, affordable, and something new. We need to keep finding ways to surprise people with the unexpected, to make the ordinary extraordinary. That’s where I believe real innovation lies. So, what’s your take?
