As the next cohort of Women In Power starts and we wrap up Women's History Month, what better way to end it than recognizing the women who have helped make #WomenInPower a reality for me. These women have constantly encouraged me to follow my dream, pushed me to do better, and held me accountable to my goals. They have shown me what true allyship looks like and are my north star when I think of how I want to show up as an ally. 1. Myself: If I didn't dream and believe in myself, I couldn't have conceptualized the idea of #WomenInPower.? 2. Saralyn: If she didn't believe in my vision and decided to come on this somewhat exciting journey, #WomenInPower would have never been birthed.? 3. Hope: Hope made sure #WomenInPower became known to the world.? 4. Kelli: Gave us her unconditional support and underwrote (financially) #WomenInPower. 5. Leslie: For not only being a charity partner to help us access funding but truly being an ally and always watching for us.? 6. #WomenInPower participants and alumni: For believing in us and coming along on this wild ride. For giving us feedback, helping us improve, and telling us what to do differently.? 7. My mum: For encouraging me to follow my heart. Take the risk. Fall. Get Up. Start all over again. Here’s something that gives stacey and me incredible hope… More than 60% of the women inventors we interact with are 45-65+ years old (this actual number is a rough estimate - and likely higher - but is definitely directionally accurate). We love talking with younger women because they approach their products with a unique perspective. But, we get a little extra energized when we get to talk with women who are on their “second mountain”. The majority of these women have had leadership positions in organizations - whether for profit or nonprofit. Many of them have raised children. Many of them have learned the hard and soft skills that are necessary for success. Many of them have been broken at least one point in their lives. And all of them want to help others. As a result, they’ve had a burning idea growing inside of them that they want to put out into the world. And they are doing it. ?? We are seeing so much diversity in women who are taking their products to market - black, white, young, older, straight, gay, rich, poor… all the things. And we LOVE it. Every epic tale has an origin story, and as Molly McGuigan shares in her post below, the #DitchtheDitty journey began with a wake-up call when someone literally handed her a ditty bag to hold during an event. ?? ?? Much like Neo taking the red pill in?The Matrix, we had a moment of clarity where we saw things in a new way: we realized that we--especially as women--- often accept tasks and responsibilities we don't want or need. We hold onto them out of politeness, niceness, fear of not being liked, or simply not knowing how to say "no." ?? The idea of a "ditty bag" became a powerful metaphor for us. Once we recognized these metaphorical ditty bags we’ve been picking up all our lives, we couldn't unsee them. We started reflecting on why we accept these "Ditties" and, more importantly, how we can start ditching them and stop picking up new ones so that we have more time and energy for DELIGHTS instead of DITTIES.
