Devil's Lettuce is back! Last year, we launched Devil's Lettuce on Friday the 13th as a seasonal release. I remember having some nerves around it. (Late-night side quests will do that to you!) But it quickly became one of our best sellers and brought our team together. In a market where everyone’s selling the same thing, I truly believe there’s power in the stories we tell and the creativity that brings them to life. Devil’s Lettuce was created for our team. We wanted to make something that would: -- Get them stoked -- Help them understand the history -- Make them smile and laugh -- Give them something to talk about with customers, friends, and family It’s the rebellious, cheeky, and kind of over-the-top side of Embarc. It has a sense of humor, isn’t afraid to challenge the norms, and maybe has a soft spot for all things nostalgia. ?? At Embarc, our mission is simple: to break down barriers and showcase how this plant can positively impact communities. We do this by spending real time with our community—listening, understanding, and demonstrating through our actions that this industry—and everyone in it—truly stands apart. Do you know the story of the Ploughman’s Lunch???? The supposedly traditional British pub meal, evocative of an idyllic rural past, was actually dreamt up by an ad agency in the 1950s. Well, kind of. JWT (the agency in question) didn’t invent the idea of eating bread and cheese with a pint of beer. But they did, along with their client The Cheese Bureau, come up with a novel way to sell it. As wartime rationing eased, this clever branding exercise turned Brits back on to the idea of eating cheese by the truckload. Then the Milk Marketing Board gave the Ploughman’s another PR push in the sixties. Now most of us can’t go two days without a few chunks of Cheddar. I love this story because I think it shows the slightly dark arts at play in some of the best marketing. You don’t always know when you’re being sold to. But its resonance goes deeper. It demonstrates what a good brand name can do, yes, but also the enduring grip of nostalgia and the slippery question of authenticity. It’s been noted how often modern brands tap into nostalgia. The Ploughman’s reveals it’s far from a new tactic. Post-war pub-goers were hankering after a simpler time, and this yearning was used to sell dairy. Same as it ever was. Also: the Cheese Bureau. The inventor of Tater Tots, Ore-Ida Foods, Inc., teamed up with Searchlight Pictures to bring back Napoleon Dynamite and create the Ore-Ida Tot-Protecting Pants. In the iconic 2000’s movie, you may recall a bully wanting some of Napoleon’s tots and then kicking the pocket where he had them stashed, resulting in a crushed snack. Inspired by this moment, they created snack-protecting pants to protect your snacks from bullies (or llamas or ligers or whatever else). My friend baked this cake at a party. I took the picture thinking exactly like you would if you watched The Great British Bake Off. This cake is a lesson on consistency. It has become an icon of their brand. The Great British Bake Off isn't just a baking show but a part of British culture. And a raspberry cake (there should be one missing) has become a logo. Here are three branding lessons from GBBO: ?? Evolve, Don't Rebrand: Great brands don't need to rebrand constantly. They evolve. GBBO has stayed true to its essence while keeping the show fresh season after season. ?? Consistency Builds Trust: That raspberry cake was there from the start. The format is the same, although the presenters have changed, and the challenges are always different. ?? Life is what you bake it. We've been busy working on a new campaign for The Silver Spoon Company, a brand that’s in almost half of all UK kitchen cupboards... Delivered across TV, Digital and OOH, we celebrate and showcase the many moments of joy that baking brings, creating an uplifting message that is brought to life with the line, ‘Life is what you bake it.’ Centred around a handed-down Victoria sponge recipe, the campaign tells a story through time, and the hero film ‘Victoria’s Sponge’ depicts the baking of one cake recipe across 50 years backed by a remake of the classic Kinks track, “Victoria.” The new campaign accompanies the redesign of the Silver Spoon packaging that landed in-store earlier this year. Heritage packaging designs make a cameo appearance in the campaign, as we delved through the archives to uncover previous designs. The film spot was directed by Bullion Productions @Abel Rubinstein whose Life In Love series is currently airing on ITV, and will run alongside OOH. The OOH creative features the same cast of characters and sums up the powerful memories created by afternoons spent baking in the kitchen. Lauren Crawford, Home Baking Brands Controller from Silver Spoon said: “Baking is a much loved hobby in the UK, but life is so busy sometimes consumers forget the joy of baking.. Our brief to Ourselves — B Corp Creative Studio was to develop a comms platform with longevity, and in response they have developed a powerful creative campaign that will inspire Britain to create more moments of baking joy.” Aaron Howard, Founder, Ourselves added: “We tend to think of Silver Spoon as two sugars in a cup of tea - when in fact it’s always been a key part of baking for over 50 years now too. I distinctly remember that bag being pulled from the cupboard when my mum would make a crumble on a Sunday.
