Food has always been central to my relationship with the wider sustainability conversation. I am lucky to have grown up in a family that prioritised good food - food grown and sourced locally and seasonally. Over the years, I've worked on lawsuits around GMO crops, baked pastries for fine dining, and served meals in top restaurants. I've learned a lot about the good and bad in the industries of how we eat, and it is a bit of a sad story. But it's not all grim news! There are so many businesses around the world seeking a cleaner future with regenerative farming and sustainable aquaculture practices. Yes, it does cost more than a mass-produced product, but since I don't wear plastic, I sure as sh*t don't want to eat it. (Big fan of Ottolenghi's butter beans as an affordable protein substitute.) So, I am incredibly excited to join the team at Blue Reef as a fractional marketing manager. Owned and operated by QLD-ers, Blue Reef is committed to providing the freshest, most delicious wild-caught fish and seafood. We eschew commercial trawling techniques, and each fish is caught by hand and within quotas set by scientists at Australian Fisheries. Not only does this result in some seriously tasty fish, but it's also helping to keep local communities thriving and fish populations healthy. Rather than retrofitting sustainability and future-thinking into the business, it is an inherent belief. Don't get me wrong, sustainable aquaculture (farmed) has a vital role to play in modern food supply chains (and there are some great brands out there), but there is something uniquely magical about fresh, hand-caught fish.
