As students read about the importance of Veterans Day...Let them deepen their learning by including a writing activity or critical written response from any leveled articles/text. Also, students can interview and honor their family's very own hero...then share it out with their classmates. #Teachingtip #Reading and Writing = Increase Comprehension #Speaking and Listening = Increase Reading Skills
Veterans Day is on November 11, and is an opportunity to help students connect with history in a meaningful and engaging way. Many schools will be introducing students to the significance of military service and the value of civic responsibility, providing resources and stories that bring history to life. For literacy-focused educators, Veterans Day offers a chance to develop historical literacy through reading activities that emphasize comprehension and critical thinking. Whether it’s exploring primary sources, reflecting on veterans' experiences, or participating in projects that honor service members, these lessons can empower students to appreciate the past while building essential literacy skills. Let’s work together to inspire students and promote a future generation that values history, empathy, and informed citizenship. ?? #VeteransDay #educators #literacy

?? Day 16/100: The Spirit of Service - Extending Beyond the Uniform ?? Day 16 of our journey brings us to a core value that defines military life and enriches our civilian communities: the Spirit of Service. Service in the military goes beyond the call of duty; it’s a deep-seated commitment to supporting one another, upholding shared values, and contributing to the greater good. This ingrained sense of service doesn’t end with the uniform; it extends into every aspect of a veteran’s life, inspiring involvement in community initiatives, volunteer work, and public service. The transition to civilian life provides a broad platform for veterans to apply this spirit of service, making meaningful impacts in their communities and beyond. Whether it’s through leadership in local organizations, volunteering, or mentoring, the contributions of veterans are invaluable. “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.” - Muhammad Ali. This quote encapsulates the essence of the spirit of service, emphasizing that giving back is a fundamental aspect of a fulfilling life. #SpiritOfService #VeteranCommunity #GiveBack #VeteransInService #Day16of100 ?? 16/100: Today, let’s celebrate the ongoing contributions of veterans in our communities and reflect on how we can each embody the spirit of service in our daily lives. It’s about making a difference, one act of service at a time.

I just read a chapter in a mission transition book that I can't stop thinking about: Understanding Who You Are. The time and season I'm navigating through currently is my transition from military service to civilian life. I can't help but relate this to my survival instruction days, keeping the lone Lieutenant from getting lost in the field! Transitioning from the military to civilian life has often felt like navigating with my compass that's a few degrees off...I think and hope I'll get there, but I'll have to see when I arrive at my destination. The phrase "hope is not a course of action" rings true in my ears, as hope alone will not get me there. The chapter I just read points out that Veterans often face challenges, like loss of identity and purpose, lack of structure, social isolation, and employment hurdles. Moreover, most of us suffer in silence as we are not quite sure how to materialize and communicate what's happening on the inside. It's important to note that rescue is not coming...we have to self-recover on this one. It's crucial to reassess, re-orient ourselves, and find new purposes. This week, I've reflected on my values, set new goals, sought support from my network, and am in the middle of building new routines to re-align myself to MY true north. I'm here to tell the community, you are not alone! #VeteranTransition #NewBeginnings #FindingPurpose

Why Community Partnerships Matter Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful community partnerships can be for veteran students. By collaborating with organizations like the VA Medical Center, we’ve created pathways that help veterans successfully transition from military life to civilian careers. These partnerships aren’t just about providing opportunities—they’re about building a strong, supportive network for those who’ve served. For anyone working with veterans or students, remember: no institution can do it alone. Community collaboration is key to delivering the holistic support that veterans truly need. What partnerships have been essential in your work with veterans or students? Let’s share insights! #VeteranSupport #CommunityPartnerships #HigherEdLeadership

Did you know many of our Host Families (and our staff) have military connections? On Veterans Day, we recognize and honor those who have served in any branch of the United States military for their service to our country. This day holds special meaning for those who have current or past service members in their own family. ???? This day not only presents a special opportunity to connect with international students about the reason we recognize this day; it can also be a good conversation-starter about ways to support veterans in your own community through volunteering. ?? This article has some helpful tips for talking to kids (and teens!) about Veterans Day this year. We’d love to keep the conversation going . . . what else would you add?

Something to think about
It’s official: K9s For Warriors has joined The Hidden Helpers Coalition! The Coalition seeks to uplift the voices of military caregivers and caregiver kids, to better understand the unique challenges they face, and enhance the support services available to them. We look forward to partnering with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, Wounded Warrior Project, and over 80 other organizations in the military and veteran arena that have pledged their support to caregivers and their families. To wake up and hear the news that we lost another United States Marine from our unit (2nd Battalion 7th Marines) is gut wrenching. This marks #59 to date and nothing about this makes it easy to stomach. #RIPClintStephens Everyone has a role to play- small things are BIG! As a great colleague of mine has shared (Matthew Miller, PHD, MPH) "we must "humbly increase knowledge beyond what we think we "know", broaden awareness beyond personal biases, and enhance our ability to deliver inclusive prevention, intervention, and postvention programs for ALL Veterans. Emphasizing that suicide is preventable, the event underscored the need for a public health approach that considers both individuals and communities." We as a community must continue to leverage our relationships, our networks, our resources.. you name it we must amplify the **** out of all of them! Use every channel possible to share! So my personal invitation and #CALLTOACTION to everyone within my network is to commit to one or more of these 6 things: 1) Find your buddies and reach out! 2) Sign up to take the pledge to talk to ten or more and reach out. Take the Pledge:https://lnkd.in/gy7yYCWm 3) Download and share the Buddy Check Outreach Kit: https://lnkd.in/gjFXbW_b 4) Take the training: https://lnkd.in/g9S8MBPv https://lnkd.in/gcAxB8sP 5) Attend the National Peer to Peer Q&A on RallyPoint, August 22nd @1-2pm ET: https://lnkd.in/gprA6YKv 6) Start a Veterans Social: https://lnkd.in/gFTWr7XG #SuicideisPreventable #Community #Relationships #BuddyCheck #Veterans #VHV #TILLVALHALLA

At Hiring Our Heroes, under the leadership of Eric Eversole we have been committed to fostering strong connections between military communities and local economies to address the unique challenges of transitioning service members and military spouses. Recently, Eric Eversole, Melissa Sanderson and Jenny Lynne Stroup headed to Louisiana in collaboration with local chambers, Bossier Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce and The Boot to identify solutions through chamber members coupled with national support. Each year, Louisiana experiences an average economic loss of $1.2 billion due to transitioning service members leaving the state. However, “The Boot” is determined to turn this loss into growth by providing service members with access to Louisiana’s economy, employers, and communities. Top discussions always include pathways to economic opportunity for military spouses, which is a key factor in retaining service members in the area. Together with partners in communities around the country, we’re building pathways for success and transforming challenges into opportunities for growth. #HiringOurHeroes #MilitarySpouseEmployment #TransitioningVeterans #EconomicGrowth #Louisiana https://lnkd.in/eCke_KUr
