I don’t want to look back in 20 years time and regret this. Thanks to the great work from Scottish Engineering and the Skills Gap Analysis released last week, we are now in a position where we need urgent change to the way we engage, demand and deliver engineers of the future. With the incredible engineering projects taking place across Scotland and the wider UK, we have a unique opportunity to create a legacy of skills that supports both today’s and tomorrow’s industry. A national engineering career strategy, a solution built on collaboration and the alignment of three key pillars: 1. Policy 2. Education 3. Industry We need to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity, showcasing how students can transition from where they are now to the incredible engineering projects shaping our future. This isn’t about placing the burden on any one stakeholder. It’s about collaboration. We can design a solution that inspires young people, and secures a future for the engineering industry. In my work with students and parents considering engineering careers, the focus is mostly on computer sciences or telecommunications. The reason is simple, these qualifications gave the best job opportunities to students. With the changing environmental landscape, there is going to be growing need for engineers who work towards a greener planet. Over 250 high school students gathered at the IBEW NECA Technical Institute (IN-Tech) to tackle a unique challenge: constructing solar arrays and designing a data center. This event isn’t just about competition—it’s about sparking curiosity, fostering innovation, and creating pathways to careers in the growing fields of renewable energy and electrical construction. Inspiring the Engineers of Tomorrow: RLSP Launches Interactive ‘Explore Engineering’ Initiative Across South West Wales The Regional Learning and Skills Partnership South West Wales have been working on ways to showcase the opportunities and pathways available in #engineering, In partnership with local businesses and schools, they have launched a new interactive ‘Explore Engineering’ website and hosted roadshows that not only highlight the engineering sector but also provide young people with hands-on experiences. Their aim is to inspire both young learners and adults to consider engineering as a career choice while also raising awareness of the current and future skills needs within the sector. A few years ago I was delivering lectures for the Royal Society (the authority on science in NZ) to early career researchers on international engagement, and my name badge said 'Dr. Andy Blair' - I mean.. if the Royal Society writes it down does it make it true?? Do I have a PhD now?? *emphatic VERY loud NO from my team* So if I get into the Engineering NZ magazine does that mean I get an Engineers Badge?? One of my team said engineers are “impatient scientists”, which feels bang on to me – they keep us moving. There’s a constant tension between deep thinking (science) and action (engineering) which helps us achieve meaningful outcomes (and gives us plenty of material for jokes). 2. They absolutely love a good whiteboarding session. 3. My broad sweeping statements, overt acts of optimism and public praise for their engineering prowess is too cringy and I should tone it down (I won’t). You're welcome team!!! We are looking forward to working with Level 3 students from Pembrokeshire College today as we share insight into hydrogen and how it will impact their career choices as businesses across industries implement more sustainable practices. Thanks to a strategic partnership with RWE, the UK’s leading electricity generator, and ARK Immersive, the immersive film production company, longer-term we will also capture footage that will be used to produce digital assets to add an interactive element to the training delivered.
