Transitioning Leadership Amidst the "#SilverTsunami" ?? Taking the reins as the new CEO of a family-affiliated business can be both a thrilling and daunting experience. For someone stepping into this pivotal role, understanding the intricate dynamics of the company while identifying underlying issues is crucial. Recognizing the need for an unbiased perspective is the first step toward effective leadership and organizational growth. Transitioning to a leadership role, especially in a family business, can be intimidating for new and seasoned CEOs alike. There's often a fear of losing control or disrupting established practices. However, engaging a third-party consultant can provide a fresh, objective assessment of the company's talent, operations, and overall strategy. This external expertise can uncover areas for improvement that may not be visible from within, ensuring that no critical issue goes unnoticed. Additionally, having a coach on the side acts as a hidden tool, offering a sounding board for observations and decisions, providing guidance, and helping to navigate the complexities of the transition. For example, we recently supported a new CEO in a similar situation. They recognized issues within their sales department, particularly with their Head of Sales. We conducted a thorough assessment and identified several gaps in performance and strategy. Working closely with the CEO, we assisted in recruiting a new Head of Sales whose capabilities and track record aligned with the company's vision and goals. Post-recruitment, we built out a comprehensive roadmap for managing this new leader, including setting clear KPIs and developing detailed playbooks. This ensured not only the success of the new Head of Sales but also empowered the CEO and the entire leadership team with a structured approach to drive growth and efficiency. With the "silver tsunami" of Baby Boomer retirements, many businesses are undergoing leadership transitions, often to the next generation. By embracing this external expertise and leveraging the support of a coach, the new CEO can develop a clear roadmap for success. The consultant’s recommendations will guide strategic decisions, foster talent development, and drive innovation, while the coach offers continuous support and valuable insights. This proactive approach demonstrates a commitment to excellence and positions the company for sustainable growth. One of my favorite aspects of working for HD Ships is 2 of the owners were w2 reps became agents, and then started hd 4 years ago. They’ve been in the candiates shoes we are recruiting, and they get what good agents want. I think often times there is a major disconnect from up top in logistics, because the leaders haven’t done the job. It’s not a prerequisite by any means, but it certainly helps and I’ve brought our owners in on meetings with candiates, and I can definitely tell it has made a difference. You hear a lot about bad leadership on LinkedIn, and I am theorizing here but IMO a lot of it is because the leadership is disconnected with the role itself.
