Empowering a Young Life: Overcoming Strabismus with Surgery. Recently, a 10-year-old girl visited my clinic for a checkup accompanied by her mother. Upon examination, I diagnosed her with strabismus, specifically alternate exotropia. I explained to her mother that her daughter has "crossed eyes" and that surgery is the recommended solution. This procedure offers several benefits. Firstly, it will prevent her peers from teasing her about her condition, thus preserving her self-esteem. Secondly, by avoiding negative comments, she will gain confidence and be able to socialize comfortably with her friends. Additionally, as she grows older, she won't encounter any obstacles related to her condition when it comes to marriage. In response, the girl's mother expressed concern about the challenging situation her daughter faces at school due to teasing from her peers. It's understandable that they're worried, but addressing the issue through surgery can provide a solution to improve her daughter's quality of life. Yesterday I really enjoyed watching top live comedian Sarah Keyworth. In the set they talked about their top surgery. It's prompted me to post today about top surgery scars... Top surgery may be a similar procedure to a mastectomy, but there are many differences between top surgery and someone undergoing a mastectomy because of cancer. The surgery enables the person to become who they always were inside, is a positive step and often one people wait years to be able to achieve due to high waiting lists and difficulty accessing services. Just because the surgery is very positive for the individual, this doesn't mean some TLC for their scars should be forgotten, simple scar care in the early months can make a difference to the scar tissue appearance for the rest of your life. Seeing a Restore Scar Massage Therapist after top surgery is a great idea to support recovery. Ideally book between 8-16 weeks after the operation, once the scabs have all gone. Our jaws get a pretty constant workout between all the talking, chewing, and yawning we do, but those simple activities become more complicated for those with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD or TMJ). There's a small, fibrous disk that serves as a cushion between the ball and socket of the joint. If it shifts out of place or erodes, that leads to jaw trouble. Typical symptoms of a TMJ problem include tenderness or pain in the jaw, difficulty chewing, pain around the face or in the ear, and even locking of the jaw joint. ?? There are a few things to try for TMJ relief. Avoid making extreme jaw movements when singing or yelling, and control yawns by putting a fist under the chin. Make small movements while chewing, and rest with the jaws slightly apart instead of fully closed (a lot of people don't realize that this is the natural position of the jaws). Most TMD cases resolve on their own, but persistent symptoms may need treatment. ???? Typical TMD treatments include ice packs, exercise, moist heat, medication, and splints. If those don't help, then the next steps often include ultrasound treatment, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or trigger-point injections. For the most extreme cases, jaw surgery may be recommended. #TMJ #TMD #JawPain #jaw
