Public transport can play a key role in helping to reduce air pollution. In Jakarta, Indonesia air pollution causes over 10,000 premature deaths each year. By investing in cleaner transit options, we can protect public health and the environment. On #CleanAirDay 2024, Breathe Jakarta partnered with the Jakarta Transportation Agency, ITDP Indonesia, & other stakeholders for discussions on a public transport policy to reduce emissions, creating a roadmap for zero-emission zones in the city.

As we step into a new year, we find ourselves pausing to reflect on the roots of Bicara Udara and the remarkable journey we've embarked upon. Born out of a commitment to address Indonesia’s air quality challenges, our story unfolds as a testament to resilience, community, and impactful change. It all started with the Jakarta Air Pollution Lawsuit in August 2019, where plaintiffs claimed authorities had failed to protect its citizens from the health impacts of air pollution. In 2020, we witnessed the community speak louder than ever. Over 78,000 signatures fueled the "Stop Burning Trash Petition," initiating our crucial dialogues with Jakarta's Environmental Agency that planted the seeds of Bicara Udara. Bicara Udara was co-founded in March 2021 by three mothers, Amalia Ayuningtyas, Novita Natalia Kusumawardani, and Ratna Kartadjoemena, who shared a deep concern for the air pollution crisis in Indonesia, particularly its impact on the health of Indonesian children. We serve as a nexus connecting communities, NGOs, academics, and clean air advocates. Later in 2021, our partnership with AQLI University of Chicago for research dissemination followed suit, broadening our impact. September 2021 marked a turning point. Collaborative efforts led to policy shifts, with the Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan amending Ambient Air Quality Standards. Simultaneously, the World Health Organization tightened PM 2.5 standards. Amidst these changes, the collective spirit triumphed. Jakarta residents emerged victorious in the Air Pollution Lawsuit, affirming the power of community resilience. Read the timeline of our journey from 2019-2023 here: https://lnkd.in/gWARDdC8 Our journey is one of response, unity, and triumph. Together, we've paved the way for cleaner air and healthier communities. Let's continue this inspiring path towards a brighter, breathable future. ???? #StandUpForCleanAir #AirQuality #CleanAirJourney

??? ???? We’re excited to share progress on our Road Transport Decarbonisation Pathway (RTDP) tool, a key innovation in reducing transport emissions and air pollution in Indonesia. This initiative comes as we prepare to mark World Clean Air Day, underscoring the importance of clean air for a sustainable future. Developed with our partners Clean Air Asia and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) under the UK PACT programme, the RTDP tool was recently tested in a workshop with over 50 key stakeholders. It empowers policymakers and urban planners to model decarbonisation pathways for the transport sector, taking into account emissions reductions and co-benefits like public health. “These efforts aim not only to achieve Indonesia’s climate targets but also help us develop economic and social co-benefits, ultimately improving the health of urban communities,” said Harriet Cooney, Deputy Head of Low Carbon Infrastructure, UK in Indonesia - UK in Indonesia - British Embassy Jakarta. Discover insights from policymakers and urban planners who tested the tool at our August workshop in Jakarta: https://lnkd.in/dBr8ZafD #CleanAirNow #WorldCleanAirDay #SustainableTransport #ClimateAction #AirPollution #Indonesia

[Jakarta's Air Pollution: Is It the Wind's Fault?] Jakarta's air pollution crisis is a public health emergency, with transport, industry, and power generation identified as the primary culprits. This emergency threatens not only the well-being of over 10 million residents but also the city's economic vitality, with total health impacts from air pollution reaching a staggering?US$ 2943.42 million annually. Transportation emerges as the primary source, dominated by internal combustion engine vehicles. The HOPE initiative proposes a comprehensive approach focusing on harmonizing vehicle emissions, overhauling public transit, paving pathways for non-motorized transport, and energizing the shift towards electric vehicles. In the industrial sector, the city battles greenwashing and calls for stringent oversight. The adoption of a Holistic Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) is crucial to ensure all industrial polluters are held accountable, addressing the sector's significant emissions contribution. Power generation's impact, though mostly regional, exacerbates Jakarta's air quality woes during the dry season due to prevailing winds. The call for a just transition emphasizes the necessity of regional collaboration and a move away from coal. Our team (Dinadra Najmi KiranaMirza Ananta Hermawan) led by Nadya Arifta Auliazaki, stresses the importance of empowering communities with Proactive AirGuard initiatives, advocating for advanced early warning systems and enhanced public participation in air quality management. Implementing these strategies requires concerted efforts across sectors, underpinned by clear regulations and robust monitoring. The road ahead is challenging but essential for safeguarding Jakarta's health, environment, and economy. The time to act is now for a breathable, sustainable Jakarta. #AirPollution #Jakarta #SustainableCities #PublicHealth #EnvironmentalPolicy #CleanAirInitiatives Do Well Do Good Leadership Programs Do Well Do Good

As you live or commute in Jakarta, have you ever noticed the air feeling particularly heavy? You're likely familiar with the term 'Air Quality Index' (AQI), but what exactly is it, and how is it measured? The AQI is a tool used to communicate how polluted the air currently is or how polluted it is forecast to become. Monitoring these figures helps us understand the health implications of the air we breathe every day. Stay informed and stay safe as you navigate through the city. #GreenJakartaNow #SmartCity #EcoCity #Environment #Sustainability

What if we could be a little more caring? At the ACT General Assembly in Jogyakarta, Indonesia, one of the key areas of the ongoing clnversations is climate justice. How do we better steward our environment and natural resources, and protect the earth? It reminds me of my beloved Sierra Leone, with the question of what we could be a bit more caring for our rich and diverse environment. Sierra Leone is home to some of the most stunning natural landscapes—our forests, coastal lines, and biodiversity are not just resources; they are lifelines. Yet, human action continues to threaten their existence. From deforestation for charcoal production to unsustainable fishing practices, our impact on the environment is evident. But what if we could shift this narrative? Imagine a future where our communities and industries prioritize sustainability, where reforestation initiatives flourish, and our coastal lines are protected from erosion and pollution. With more conscious efforts, we can balance development with environmental stewardship. Caring for our environment means caring for future generations. By implementing stronger policies and engaging civil society, we can preserve these natural resources while fostering economic growth through eco-friendly tourism, responsible agriculture, and sustainable fishing. It’s time for a collective commitment to be a little more caring. Sierra Leone’s forests and coastal ecosystems don’t have to be victims of progress—they can be the pillars of a thriving, resilient nation. Let's take action to protect and nurture our natural heritage, so that it continues to sustain us for generations to come. #Sustainability #Environment #SierraLeone #EcoConsciousLiving #FutureGenerations
