Heather Shaner, a fierce, blue-haired defense attorney from D.C., has been championing those who can’t afford legal representation for over 40 years. It is not that Trump promotes this it's that he is too weak to prevent it. Criticism is often aimed at leaders perceived as not exercising strong control over their political factions or allies. In this case, if Trump's inability (or unwillingness) to intervene leads to outcomes like Matt Gaetz’s disruptive actions and their consequences, it could reflect a leadership style more reactive than proactive. Trump's strategy has often been characterized by his reliance on populist appeal and maintaining loyalty within his base, even at the expense of party cohesion or institutional stability. If the actions of individuals like Gaetz inadvertently foster bipartisanship—or disrupt the Republican Party’s traditional power structures—it could indeed underscore weaknesses in leadership or a lack of appetite to enforce discipline. Leaders who fail to prevent such disruptions can appear complicit, even if unintentionally so, which may erode their perceived authority.
