Here's a classic GP hiring mistake: Prospect: “Why should I join your practice?” Recruiter: “We offer the most comprehensive services of any clinic in the area. We have state-of-the-art equipment, a large team of specialists, and a cutting-edge patient management system.” Prospect: “That’s too bad. I prefer a smaller practice where I can focus on patient care without the distractions of a big facility.” The moral of the story? Your benefits only matter if they matter to your prospect. The solution? Detach from the hire. Let go of assuming your practice is the best fit for every GP. How? Shift from explaining to understanding. Prospect: “Why should I join your practice?” Recruiter: “Our practice isn’t for everyone. What do you look for in a work environment?” Prospect: “I prefer a smaller practice where I can focus on patient care.” Recruiter: “We might not be the best option because of our large scale. However, I can recommend some smaller practices that align with your preferences.” Prospect: “That would be great.” It’s not your job to convince every GP to join your practice. Shift from hiring to finding the right fit.

If they are always Hiring, that could mean they are Always Firing! Yesterday, I was sitting outside during my Meal break. I heard a group of youngsters were talking about that they had just been fired. To my surprise, when I heard the name of the company, it was recently transitioned from Cold calling Call Center to Medical Billing Company. They were hired for their Business Development Department ( fancy name for sales agent). So, What did I do? Yesterday I encountered a problem most physicians will face: I was presented with an employment contract I did not understand. As an independent locum tenens physician I see a lot of contracts and negotiate a lot of deals. And I’ve been doing this a long time, so I thought I’d pretty well seen it all. But this one stumped me because: -it contains a non-compete clause that was ambiguous vis a vis which entities it covered; -it specifically says that I cannot even ASK about a pay increase for a year (that’s a new one to me…); -it says that I am waiving my rights to be a member of any class action in the future (also a new one to me…); -it has a binding arbitration section that is a full page long, single-spaced, and impenetrably complex; -it contains a clause that says that, after this contract ends in a year, if I sign another contract with the same company, ALL of the provisions in the original contract apply to that deal as well, apparently in perpetuity (again, new to me, and if I may, WTF???). Normally I would simply decline the offer and move on, but this position is of some interest to me, so I’m going to do the smart thing: I’m hiring a healthcare attorney with contract experience to review the document, explain it to me, and suggest alternatives. This will cost me probably $600-800, but in this case, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Remember, you’re a business, and nobody cares more about your business than you do. Be smart, be skeptical. Don’t believe the recruiter’s sales pitch. Make them prove their case. Trust, but verify. They may not welcome such scrutiny, but any organization with integrity should be willing to be subjected to it and should be able to address all your concerns.
