The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) is observing Hunger Action Month (HAM) in September to raise awareness about food insecurity in the U.S. and take action to end hunger. When people are fed?well, their minds and bodies are nourished, and individuals go from just living to thriving.? In September, VDSS will host, promote and encourage activities for all agency staff in the home office and throughout the commonwealth to highlight how securing food for those in need is an investment in our communities. By joining this movement, our collective voices, actions and commitment will help ensure every person has the food?they?need to flourish. We invite all VDSS staff to participate in the planned activities listed below! - Volunteering at a local food bank or other food-connected organization with co-workers.?? -Hosting a food drive and/or collecting monetary donations for local food banks.? -Conducting a “HAM Walk” fundraiser (like a cake walk where people make a financial donation for the chance to win a baked good-homemade or store-bought-or fruit, supplied by co-workers) with the donations given to the local food bank.? -Hosting a “lunch-in” where co-workers eat together while listening to a speaker and participating in a discussion about the impact of food insecurity.?? -Wearing orange (the HAM color) on Fridays during September and on activity days. All?Virginians should have the resources and services they need to shape strong futures for themselves, their families and their communities. Thank you for all you do for the citizens of the Commonwealth and for your communities!?

The recent findings from OzHarvest's Community Needs Survey echo what we've been witnessing firsthand here at Wayside Chapel. Like many other charities, we've experienced a massive surge in demand over the last six months. The survey found across charities, 30% of individuals were seeking help for the first time, including those from new demographics such as two-income households. Shockingly, 67% of charities cannot meet current demand—a 20% increase over the past year. This is a stark reminder that many in our community, from working families to pensioners, are struggling more than ever, with an estimated 30,000 people going without food each month. At Wayside, we love when the bright yellow trucks and vans from OzHarvest arrive at our doors, bringing the vital fresh food supplies that allow us to offer our visitors the dignity of choice in our bustling Community Cafes. We couldn’t do without their support and partnership. As the cost of living crisis continues to bite, it's crucial we don’t let our most vulnerable slip through the cracks. Get in touch to discuss how we can tackle food insecurity - together. #CostOfLivingCrisis #FoodInsecurity #PartnershipsForGood #SocialImpact

This month is Hunger Action Month. I've learned that neighbors prefer to keep their hunger a secret, feeling ashamed when they can't feed themselves or their families. Organizations work tirelessly to provide millions of meals to combat hunger daily. Please consider volunteering at a food pantry or food bank to improve the lives of community members around you and help families and individuals struggling with hunger to put food on their tables. Consider donating to a food organization that serves the community. Your contribution will help these organizations cover operating costs to feed families, seniors, people with disabilities, and others in need. As a food justice leader in New York City, I can tell you that the lines at the food pantry are growing every month. More and more people are experiencing food insecurity, which means they need access to adequate quality food to meet their basic needs. There are many reasons why people need food pantries. Families and seniors are trying to save money due to rising New York City apartment rents and increasing food prices and household expenses at grocery stores. Increased visits to food pantries: In 2023, families in New York City made over one million monthly visits to food pantries, soup kitchens, and community food programs. This is nearly a 100% increase since before the pandemic, and it's the most significant increase among different age groups. Please visit brmuhc.networkforgood.com to donate to the Brooklyn Rescue Mission, which has served 3 million meals to hungry New Yorkers over the last 20 years. Rev. Robert Ennis Jackson

On May 11th to help Stamp Out Hunger, the South Bay Outreach Center launches a charity flower mart for its homeless prevention services in LA. For the 4th year in a row hunger rises worldwide. To help prevent homelessness, the South Bay Outreach Center (SBOC) has been serving the community through its free food pantry and other social services for 40 years. This month, on May 11, National Stamp Out Hunger Day, the SouthBay Outreach Center will launch a flower mart to raise funds to support the nonprofit's mission at the Bay Club of Redondo Beach. Organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger is the largest single-day food drive in the USA, helping over 45 million Americans facing food insecurity annually. Each week, the SBOC provides fresh groceries for 400 individuals, families and seniors who are homebound. According to the latest Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC), nearly 282 million people worldwide are starving. This is the fourth year in row of a rise in food insecurity, especially among children and women who are suffering the most from hunger. To get involved, all people need to do is fill a bag with canned and other non-perishable food. Their letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it to a local food bank and the South Bay Outreach Center. Learn more @Hoy-southbay.org

The numbers are bleak. The country’s cost-of-living pressures are forcing more Australians to seek emergency food services. According to Foodbank Victoria’s Matt Tilley, more than two million households have gone hungry and experienced "severe food insecurity in the last 12 months” - 57,000 people every day are helped by Foodbank. See below for the full 9News report. Infoxchange's national service directory of over 420,000 community orgs and social support services powers Foodbanks' FindFood search tool and many other online search tools across Australia. This directory logged over 7 million searches last year and it's the same directory that powers our very own Ask Izzy. Thousands of Australians struggling to feed their families are turning to Infoxchange's search directory via Ask Izzy. As a not-for-profit social enterprise, we keep this website free, but it needs urgent support – your tax-deductible donation will ensure it stays free and functional. Understanding Food Insecurity Food insecurity refers to the lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. In Manatee County, various factors contribute to food insecurity, including: ·????????Economic Challenges: Unemployment, underemployment, and low wages can make it difficult for families to afford enough food. ·????????Housing Costs: High housing costs can leave little room in budgets for food. ·????????Limited Access: In some areas, there might be a lack of nearby grocery stores or transportation options, limiting access to fresh, affordable food. Resources and Support The Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program operates year round supporting our local food pantries and reaching out into the community to provide meals. How You Can Help:?https://lnkd.in/eVu4xfXe ·????????Donate Food ·????????Volunteer ·????????Monetary Donations ·????????Raise Awareness: Share information about food insecurity and the Mayors’ Feed the Hungry program to help those in need connect with support.

Food insecurity isn't just a challenge faced by low-income neighborhoods. It's likely present in your own backyard. With corporate cost-cutting and reorganizations, many people are grappling with unemployment and putting food on the table. You never know what's happening behind closed doors. Writing this post because I found out my daughter has a classmate whose family has been missing meals. I do not know the family but figuring out how to invite them over for a meal or offer support. Here are three actionable steps we can all take to make a difference: 1?? Volunteer at local food banks or community kitchens: Offer your time and support to organizations dedicated to providing meals for those in need. Your assistance can make a tangible impact in alleviating hunger within your community. 2?? Donate non-perishable food items: Take stock of your pantry and consider donating surplus food items to local shelters or food banks. Even small contributions can collectively make a significant difference in combating food insecurity. 3?? Advocate for policy change: Use your voice to advocate for policies that address the root causes of food insecurity, such as unemployment benefits, affordable housing, and access to nutritious food options. By raising awareness and supporting systemic change, we can work towards a more equitable society where everyone has access to an ample food supply. Coincidently, this Wednesday's Inspired Money livestream is talking about "The Power of Giving: Making an Impact through Philanthropy." There are benefits to both giving and receiving. Together, let's join hands to tackle food insecurity and ensure that no one in our communities goes hungry. My family enjoyined volunteering at the Food Bank last week during winter break. How are you giving back? #FoodInsecurity #CommunitySupport #MakeADifference #FinancialAdvisor
