Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost testified Tuesday afternoon before the House Criminal Justice Committee in support of legislation that would expand the eligibility of human trafficking survivors to have their criminal records expunged. House Bill 385 would remove the predicate requirement for those applying for expungement of fourth- and fifth-degree felonies and all misdemeanors. A criminal record is very common for trafficking victims, and it stands as a major roadblock to their recovery and ability to seek gainful employment, stable housing, and more. The Collaborative and members of the Coordinated Response work with survivors to provide mental health counseling and housing assistance. Nevertheless, prior convictions prevent survivors from rebuilding a better life and remain a constant reminder of their abuse. At every job interview, they must explain the circumstances of their victimization, which re-traumatizes them and makes potential employers uncomfortable. Expanded opportunities for expungement are needed so that survivors can move past their victimization toward a brighter future. Now More Than Ever, We Must Be Our Own Safety Advocates and Protection Professionals. I'm a Safety advocate and #event #protectionprofessional in an aggressive city during an aggressive time in national culture. As such, #threatassessment, regular rehearsal of how to preempt negative possibilities and everyday carry (EDC) are second nature and often personal first choices. The public mobilization part of my advocacy encourages people to become, within comfort zones and the law, their own protection professionals and safety advocates since the Working Class can't afford private #bodyguards and site #securityofficers nor are most considered worthy of priority response by local law enforcement. I look at enabling ideologues zeal to defund police and disarm the public as serious motivators to mobilize. It's clear these two goals, along with perilous pampering of violent career criminals, combine to produce profound lack of Safety and greater urgency to enact its creation. From #selfdefense to reimagining once tame occupations like #retailsecurity, #lossprevention and #eventsecurity as front line fields of public #protection, it's clear we have no choice but to displace politically enabled violence, theft and disorder an enabling ideology has unleashed. Kerr for dropping some serious wisdom on one of my favorite topics during their session yesterday at the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) conference ?? They dove right into the topic of "There are no Sedentary Unskilled Jobs Anymore," and let me tell you, it was amazing! ? They pointed out the challenges we face with those old-school vocational experts who just won't let go of outdated ideas about sedentary work. It is bonkers that VEs still identify Addresser and Surveillance System Monitor as Sedentary, Unskilled jobs! ?? ? As advocates, it is time to challenge the notion that sedentary unskilled work still exists. Effective advocacy can help convince the ALJs that times have changed, and so has the job market.
