National Association for Regional Councils (NARC) Conference -? Day 3 -2/13/24 I'm here in Washington DC getting knowledge and making connections to address the issues our region is concerned with, such as affordable housing. Today's meetings and sessions were thought-provoking, starting with a session on the challenges of affordable housing, connected to the housing supply. Commissioner from Naco reminded us all, "Be open to a changing environment and be a catalyst to that change." Director Jason Jordan encouraged, "Make investments in people by making investments in infrastructure." We received printed and online resources to help in these endeavors. Affordable housing and workforce housing are getting more difficult due to rising costs, whether from needed zoning reform, cost of construction, and cost of land. But we can address the things we control, like regulatory zoning and outdated zoning codes, etc. Later, we heard from Urban Forestry, which covered opportunities for federal support for a greener and healthier environment. Plus, in our roundtables, connected with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the numerous grant opportunities our localities, whether municipal, school district, or in partnerships with non profits can take advantage of. Collaboration is key. Finally ended with the NARC Board Meeting saying farewell to outgoing ED and incoming while accomplishing plans for upcoming changes and conferences. On the 19st of January, Ruben Schmitz graduated from the track Management in the Built Environment (MBE) at the ‘Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment’. His thesis, “Towards Sustainable Investments - Integrating Embodied Carbon Reduction in Investment Decision-Making of an Investor by Using a Discounted Cash Flow Model“, was awarded an 8, and we would like to congratulate him on this achievement. He completed his thesis while performing an internship at a.s.r. real estate. Ruben Schmitz explored the financial barriers and impacts of incorporating embodied carbon reduction strategies into the real estate investment decision-making process of investors by using the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Model. This included examining how considerations of embodied carbon can be integrated into the DCF model and understanding the potential financial implications of these considerations on the overall investment decision-making process. As a result, it needs to contribute to guidance and stimulate the built environment towards achieving carbon net-zero by 2050, by aligning financial models and the investment decision-making process with this goal. Ruben was an active member of the BOSS community. He organised the Real Estate Career Day and the year after he was active as Board member as treasurer. What's most important to you when you're making a hire? ?? Not the full "laundry list" of requirements, skills, and experience. These are crucial to finding someone who can be successful in the role you're trying to fill. But I'm suggesting going beyond that. To create a list like renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright shared in his 1943 autobiography.
