To those wondering why I'm posting this on LinkedIn: Stepping into the world of vinyl takes this label from a DIY hobby to a legitimate business. I can order tapes all day and make them on my stereo and if they don't sell, I'm out one or two hundred. Getting a record pressed involves so much more project management and a couple grand of investment up front. From a high level perspective, here are translatable skills from this project to positions that I'm looking to get hired for. Sourcing: I'm researching pressing plants all over the US and Europe for the best pricing and quality. I can't ship these in poly mailers, so now I need to source packaging as well. Logistics: I'm weighing all my cogs and analyzing them a lot closer. I had to sign licensing agreements to acquire the music from its current rights holder. That alone took close to a year to achieve. I'm having to pick and choose the features of the product that are the most important. Taking production time frames into account so that I can put up a pre-order with the appropriate expectations. Design and Marketing: I'm creating everything. Considering that the release is 20 years old, all the artwork needs a face lift. With the band's approval, I will be creating the jacket layouts, and accompanying t-shirt designs. On top of that, I'm creating all the marketing materials and campaigns. What I want to show employers and recruiters is that I am not the type of person to shy away from a huge project with consequence. I will tackle what I feel passionately about and do it as best I can. Had I decided to stick with just tapes, I'd be left wondering if I could have done vinyl. I don't ever want to wonder "what if" or "could I have done it better?"
