His 2024 commencement speech to graduates of the grande école, masters, and PhD illustrates this commitment more than ever because tomorrow it will be up to new graduates to carry it forward. The Dean emphasized that in a world more polarized than ever, our role as an academic institution was : ?? to produce knowledge and disseminate it, in the "pursuit of truth, objectivity and impartiality"; ? ?? to promote critical thinking by examining major issues from all angles; ? ?? to promote academic exchange that open hearts. He urged students to resist the fragmentation of the world, on our campus and within our community of 80,000 graduates worldwide. My overall Top 10 continues... 10. Al-Farabi Kazakh National University 9. Massachusetts Institute of Technology There are many reasons why MIT could be considered in my Top 10 (but not for having a car put on the Great Dome: Cambridge did that back in 1958). The first reason is interdisciplinarity - we've always suspected that MIT was good at this, its relatively flat structure and clear focus, followed up with real financial investment has all helped it to top the first ever Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings https://lnkd.in/ecVgFzFk The second reason is that it has been willing to demonstrate its sustainability credentials through the Impact Rankings, whilst realising that this might not be the area it performs most strongly in. It takes real commitment to hold yourself open to this type of scrutiny, something that is sadly lacking from some notable institutions! The final reason is their commitment to data. What does the future hold for university finances? This was the topic we sensed into during my two futures thinking workshops at the European University Association Funding Forum last week at the University of Helsinki. ??Yes, there are many external factors that make #university funding a challenging topic (both for the income and the cost side): from demographic decline in many countries to geopolitical conflicts; from political instability and polarisation to changing public funding priorities and increasing political steering as well as emerging investment needs to address the sustainability challenge and digitalisation .... ??Yes, national regulatory frameworks are different across Europe and not all universities have the level of institutional autonomy we would wish for to be able to make strategic decisions by themselves.... ?This is all the more a reason, why we should not put our heads in the sand, but roll-up the sleaves, develop and implement strategies that work with these challenges and external circumstances and find new ways forward, also together with other stakeholders (e.g. philanthropy was mentioned as an untapped source several times). Collaboration is becoming more important! ?? Many thanks to the participants for engaging with the future in a creative way and bringing in perspectives from across Europe. I love to hold space for such exchanges and help groups to tap into their collective wisdom to come up with ideas and strategies how universities and each and everyone in their specific roles can help to shape the future in a positive way. As EUA President Josep M. Garrell put it in his opening speech: "Besides autonomy and funding, we need vision to lead universities into the future". ??Yes, this also means for university leadership to sometimes have to take tough decisions and deal with dilemma, which is why #university #leadership development is crucial. #FuturesThinking and #StrategicForesight are tools that can be helpful for strategic development, if combined with #leadership and willingness to act. ?? This is why, I am happy to also contribute to the 2025 pilot of the EUA Leadership Development Programme lead by Thomas Estermann and María Blanco Palencia with a module on futures thinking and foresight together with Thomas Ekman J?rgensen. The IFSAM - International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management Congress 2024 takes place THIS WEEK. The 2024 Congress runs ONLINE from 25th to 27th September 2024 FREE OF CHARGE, with the Congress theme of "New perspectives and pathways for impact in a precarious world." For IFSAM’s 17th Congress, they have decided to tackle major challenges facing the world of business & management higher education, and to focus on the up-and-coming generation of new scholars in the community. Their round table sessions address the various pressures shaping the institutional context within which they work, the pressing need for business schools to make their work relevant to the climate emergency and other aspects of sustainability, and the remarkable insights and innovations that can come from considering indigenous management and decolonisation. They are also introducing a new IFSAM initiative, the IFSAM Futures Academy, through a roundtable session featuring a number of IFSAM early career researchers. In this webinar, you will hear from the academic directors of Università Bocconi and HEC Paris, along with insights from first-cohort students and faculty representatives, highlighting the program's vision and the benefits of this unique partnership. The double program, Bachelor in?Data, Society and Organisations HEC-BOCCONI?is an interdisciplinary program that prepares students to put data to work to embrace the challenges of the coming decades. The aim is to develop fluency in two areas:?data sciences (mathematics, data, AI), as well as behavioral and social sciences. A solid foundation in these two fields will be combined with applied skills in management and organisations. In their final year students can specialize in a specific area (Law, Public Policy & Government, Climate Change & Sustainability, Management & Organisations) to apply their skills, and develop a research and entrepreneurial approach to design concrete solutions to societal and organisational challenges. This unique combination of in-depth multidisciplinary knowledge with problem-solving and entrepreneurial skills makes students very attractive to employers, although many may choose to pursue their studies and specialize with a Master degree. The dual program is an innovative, academically challenging, and highly selective Bachelor of Arts and Science. Entirely taught in English, the program takes place over 3 years (180 ECTS), first at Bocconi University (Semesters 1 to 3), then at HEC Paris (Semesters 4 to 6). A Truly Inspiring Academic Kick-Off at Ichec Brussels Management School: Preparing for Tomorrow’s Challenges ?? Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the academic opening at ICHEC, and it was nothing short of inspiring. ICHEC is committed to rethinking its curriculum to address the challenges of tomorrow, and this event laid the foundation for an exciting year ahead. ?? One of the most impactful moments was hearing former Belgian Prime Minister, Sophie Wilmès, share her perspective on the reawakening of Europe. ???? Her speech was a powerful blend of realism and hope—acknowledging the complex issues we face, but ultimately reinforcing a message of optimism for Europe’s future. Following her keynote, I had the rare opportunity to engage in a one-on-one conversation with Ms. Wilmès. I asked her a challenging question: "By refusing dialogue with political extremes, are we not empowering them further?" ?? Her response was as insightful as it was nuanced. She agreed that dialogue is necessary, but made it clear that negotiating with extremes is a line we cannot cross. To tackle these forces, she explained that politics must be rooted in common sense, with leaders unafraid to confront uncomfortable truths and describe reality exactly as it is. This exchange was incredibly thought-provoking and timely, especially considering the current state of our societies and the political landscape. ?? A big thank you to ICHEC for organizing such meaningful events that foster intellectual growth, critical thinking, and provide opportunities to engage with key thought leaders. ??

I am pleased to share that I have successfully completed the ‘Management of International Development: Towards Agenda 2030’ online course on Coursera, offered by the University of Bocconi. This online course is part of my Global Impact Project programme, within my BBA at EDHEC Business School. ?? ? The first chapter aims to explain the idea of international development, its key actors, and how they interact with each other. We also learn about Agenda 2030 for development and the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. The second chapter aims to provide an understanding of the concept of governance, the different structures of governance, and the business models used by governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organisations. This includes acknowledging their influence on decision-making, agreements, rules, and strategies. In the third chapter, we explore the different funding and financing methods of international organisations and how they invest these financial resources to efficiently attain the Sustainable Development Goals and enhance international development. Lastly, the fourth chapter focuses on the important role of human capital in international organisations and the challenges related to human capital. This highlights the critical need for strong human resource management, given the continuous social, human, and technological changes. ?? ? Overall, this online course was very enriching, enabling me to enhance my understanding and knowledge of international organisations and their crucial role in international development. #coursera #bocconiuniversity #internationaldevelopment
