For too long, student-survivors seeking accountability and enforcement from the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) have felt betrayed and disappointed. Recently, VRLC, in collaboration with 21 other organizations, urged OCR to address the backlog of cases and remove barriers that prevent survivors from receiving any meaningful outcome to their complaints. Remember Darryl George, the boy, banned from school for his locs? Well, there's an update. Well, he was denied his request for protection. ? By Judge Jeffrey Brown. ? Reason: A delay in his appeal. I am deeply concerned. → Darryl was removed from class. → Placed on in-school suspension. → And forced to attend an off-campus program. This is NOT just a legal issue. (It's an injustice that strikes at the core of who we are as a society) This ruling raises BIG questions. 1) What do we have the Crown Act for? 2) Is the Crown Act truly protecting students' rights? 3) What message are we sending across about self-expression and cultural identity? The implications of this case go beyond Darryl's situation. (It shows that systemic biases remain rooted within our institutions) We must confront these discriminatory practices. ? We must demand accountability from institutions. Darryl (like every other student) deserves to learn ? Without the weight of discrimination.
