People often assume and expect that we remember every detail of a major event in our lives like a camera. But traumatic memories are not processed the same as regular ones. Fear, threat or intense stress during a traumatic event can result in an incomplete memory. Unfortunately, these kinds of normal inconsistencies are often used to undermine victims’ credibility in court trials. It's time to debunk the notion that victims should remember every single detail of a traumatic incident. Our hearts go out to Belleville and all the first responders who are grappling with this overwhelming situation. The report of 24 overdoses in just a few hours is deeply concerning and highlights a critical issue that demands immediate attention. Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord's observations regarding the insufficient enforcement at Canadian ports sheds light on a significant part of the problem. This week I will complete Day 3 of a #domesticviolence trial. These parties have been #divorced for over 10 years but the #triggers of the #abuse are so palpable in the courtroom for the #victim. It seems timely to share this #information on the #hiddenwounds of domestic violence: 1. #Cognitiveimpairment such as #memoryloss and difficulty concentrating; 2. #PTSD; 3. #Mooddisorders surface like #anxiety and #depression; 4. I always love appearing on Law & Crime to discuss current high-profile cases. Today we focused on MA vs. Christine and the tragic murder of her husband. Recently, we have been hearing about many cases within families where there is toxicity, addiction, #domesticviolence and #pathology. When the judge told the defendant's attorneys they could not plea #selfdefense, they decided to use "accidental death," and they argued that Christine was #suicidal when the murder occurred. It's a privilege to chair and contribute to the Tackling Honour-Based Abuse (HBA) Conference 2024. Honour crimes in England increased by 60% in two years. Cases of so-called?honour-based abuse?(HBA) are on the rise in England and Wales. Data from 26 out of 39 constabularies showed that there were 2,594 cases of “honour-based” abuse – which includes forced marriage, rape, death threats and assault – in 2022, compared with 1,599 in 2020. The increase, which was even more pronounced since 2016 (up 193%), may be partly explained by more victims coming forward and improved identification of offences by police – but other factors are also believed to be at work. #geconferencehonourbasedabuse #honour #abuse #humanrights
