The Wine List Crisis It's just too often that I find myself staring at a wine-list full of mass-market labels that I could easily pick up at any local supermarket or convenience store, albeit at a hefty markup. I feel as frustrated as a mosquito in a mannequin shop. I know deep down that I'd get more enjoyment if I choose beer. And not even the craft beer sort. Just any beer. But who's fault is it? Are restaurants to blame for playing safe, boring and predictable? Is it that we, the wine drinkers aren't ready to embrace something new & different ? Are we so annoyed at the mark-ups that we only choose to drink good quality wine at home? Maybe it's us importers that recommend these wines to the restaurants because they're more profitable to us? Whilst we see the modern Maltese chef taking pride in sourcing their ingredients from speciality purveyors, these wines are akin to a Michelin star chef serving a packet of pre-heated supermarket gnocchi. Maybe it's just a chicken and egg situation. We need to break the trend crack it open - fast!
