EPISODE 17 | Women's Contributions To Our National Defense This episode is all about the many contributions women have made to our national defense and how the military services are changing to better leverage the full talents of the American people. Leading off, Joe speaks with U.S. Marine Corps attack helicopter pilot and combat veteran, Katey van Dam (1:33). Katey deployed in support of combat operations in Afghanistan and counter-piracy operations in the Horn of Africa/Gulf of Aden. She also co-founded No Exceptions, an initiative that led the effort to get the Department of Defense to allow women to compete for jobs in the infantry, artillery, tanks, combat engineers and other previously closed military occupational specialties (MOSs). Next, Ellen chats with Army veteran Phyllis Wilson (14:05) who served 37 years in the Army as a Military Intelligence Voice Intercept Operator. Phyllis has served around the globe and has deployed to Iraq several times as an Intelligence Analyst with Special Ops. She now leads the efforts of the Military Women's Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery - whose mission is to capture and tell the stories of the many women who have defended our country. Lastly, Lindsay Knight (43:15) of Blue Star Families joins us for a discussion on what her organization is doing to strengthen the military community. Fantastic and accurate assessment.
Combat isn’t war. America hasn’t been at war since World War II, when the entire American population and industry were mobilized. Our Army and military have achieved the unthinkable through combat in the Global War on Terror (GWOT), but all-out war is a different game. To discuss how the U.S. Army is preparing for the next fight and the potential for war against a near-peer adversary, Fran Racioppi traveled to the Pentagon to sit down with Sergeant Major of the Army Mike Weimer. Together, they defined professional warfighting and the importance of an all-volunteer force. They broke down the relationship between the art and science of leadership among commissioned and non-commissioned officers. The SMA shared how his experience in the shadows of Special Forces prepared him for the limelight of the SMA role. They also talked about the future, including his vision for solving the recruiting challenge, how warfare is evolving from the kill chain to the kill web, his plans to retain the right people, and why the integration of Special Operations and the regular Army is more important now than ever. One element missing: An accurate understanding of how the forces the SMA is talking about in the Pacific prepared for war. Most Americans don't even know. War Plans against Japan: 1907 developed, full 3 phase operation by 1911, updated 11 times until 1935 and then integrated into multi theater. War Training against Japan: 1923 to 1940. EVERY YEAR FULL SCALE EXERCISES by the US Navy, Marines, and occasionally US Army, sometimes twice a year. Procurement: Based upon operational limitations revealed by the massive exercises and focused on enabling the War Plan. We haven't had anything close since. Until we do, we are not serious. https://lnkd.in/gR5Vj9cx

What is our greatest advantage over our near peer adversaries? Hence preserving our nation and our way of life? Sergeant Major of the Army Mike Weimer believes it is leadership. In the military, we are inculcated with leadership education and values from day one. We are taught how to lead, and once we prove competent enough to handle the responsibility, we start small (rifle team, or a platoon). As a leadership coach and educator, all too often I see organizations put the cart before the horse. They promote people based upon their ability to do the job at the line level, task them with leading a group, but they never invest in their leadership education and training. It is never too soon, or too late, to begin your leadership journey.
The noncommissioned officer corps is the asymmetric advantage that sets the United States Army apart from our adversaries. Our NCOs lead our Army with professionalism, ensuring tasks are completed to standard. Fran Racioppi sat down with Sergeant Major of the Army Mike Weimer to discuss the definition of professional warfighting and the importance of an all-volunteer force. Mike broke down the relationship between commissioned and noncommissioned officers, balancing both art and science. He also shared how his experience in the shadows of Special Forces prepared him for the limelight of the SMA role. They also explored the future, including his vision for addressing the recruiting challenge, how warfare is evolving from the kill chain to the kill web, his plans to retain the right people, and why the integration of Special Operations and the regular Army is more important now than ever. Reduction of U.S. Army Special Operations Forces? Even as the U.S. Army makes plans to cut up to 3,000 special operations soldiers, the demand for such forces is growing around the world, the head of U.S. Special Operations Command told lawmakers a few weeks ago. Faced with a more active China, “I certainly wouldn’t support” shrinking the force, SOCOM’s Fenton told lawmakers. These decisions are mostly short-sighted and usually based off of eliminating costs, not necessarily because of future or current mission requirements. Commanders and leaders in and out of the military are not always familiar with the role special operations performs. Unit commanders don’t often get to command or coordinate special operations units within their span of control. In the last 20-year war, there was a surge of special operations forces capabilities due to the various factors involved. Today, leaders believe new technologies will replace some of the roles that SOF contributed to in the past. In our recent episode (EP-366), we discussed conventional vs special operations and how commanders often misunderstand the importance of internal cohesion and communication. The intriguing discussion probes the diverse cultures within the military and why both are essential to maintain a balanced force.
