What if shelters put healthy adult stray cats without traceable microchips where they are most likely to be reunited with their family? (Hint - this is where they were found). A shelter created a program called "Tag You're Home" (TYHP) to answer this question, and my colleague Aimee Dalrymple, DVM, MS, DABVP (Shelter Med Practice), and I were able to present the data from the program at the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners conference this week. We found that over 80% of the 32 healthy stray adult cats without microchips enrolled in the TYHP did not require intake to the shelter, and over 30% had a confirmed return to owner (RTO) outcome through the TYHP. While this was very similar to the 28% adult RTO rate reported during the same period for adult cats with intake to the shelter (about 50% of which were reunited via microchip), the TYHP provided a valuable tool to RTO cats without microchips and reduced shelter intake of adult stray cats by 10%. Cats with an outcome of RTO through traditional methods were found a median of 0.4 km (4 city blocks) from their home address.
