Hard Truths About Transitioning Transitioning from military life to civilian entrepreneurship is not a walk in the park. The truth is, no one will hand you success; it’s earned. When I left the military, I thought my discipline would carry me through. But here’s the uncomfortable reality: Discipline without direction leads nowhere. It wasn’t until I built a support system and found my reason that things started to change. I had to stop waiting for things to fall into place and start creating the needed structure. It wasn’t easy. There were hard days when I questioned everything. But the minute I stopped waiting for things to happen and started taking control, I saw progress. Some people like to make a year end post that focuses on the year that passed. Some chose to wax poetic about the coming year and be optimistic about what may happen. Consider me part of the latter. I am excited about what will come in 2024: New business ideas. Career moves. Graduation from the The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Additionally, I continue to be excited about helping fellow veterans. Through our work at the Chicago Marines Foundation we support many different fantastic organizations that help #veterans. From an investing group I am in but completely appropriate here too. Navigating post-military life can be challenging. But you are not alone in this. Here are some tips to help you make the most of it: - Use your GI Bill to invest in your education. - VA loans can be your ally in real estate investing. - Networking is crucial, keep your battle buddies close. - Translate your military skills to civilian lingo on your resume. - Budgeting is different now, plan for it. - Seek mentors who've walked this path. - Keep learning, post-service life is full of lessons. - Start small in investing, think duplex, not complex. - Embrace entrepreneurship, your discipline is invaluable. - Be patient, growth takes time. - Remember, you're not just a veteran, you're a valuable asset. #MilitaryTransition #VeteranSuccess #FinancialFreedom
