It was cool to see Owner recognized in Forbes’ Next Billion Dollar Startup list but, to be honest, I didn’t feel nearly the excitement that I would have expected. ?? I think that’s because I’ve been operating on the assumption that becoming a unicorn is a near term eventuality. ?? We/I have our sights set much higher than that. ?? The market is massive. The product has more traction than anyone in restaurant tech. The talent density is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. (If Forbes only knew how we’ve transformed the business in 2024. ??) We are trying to level the playing field for hundreds of thousands of independent restaurant owners. We have all the ingredients, and more importantly the ambition, to become a decacorn in the next few years. And our mission doesn’t stop there. I also think my enthusiasm was muted because I worry that these accolades will attract the wrong type of person. Someone who’s looking for the next shiny object. What got us here are mission driven people with crazy ambition, teamwork, grit, resilience, work ethic and a growth mindset. I never want to lose that DNA. This recognition was made possible by the sacrifices of our team. There are real sacrifices to be a part of a mission like this. In order to be successful over the next decade, we need to attract people with that same wiring. Shiny object seekers beware. Nonetheless, I’m excited for the recognition because our team deserves it and I’m eternally grateful for the team members that got us to this point. Appreciate you all. ?? Onwards and upwards. ?? I've been an entrepreneur for almost five years, and I’ve seen the highs and (huge) lows of working in a startup. I've also worked with many other start-ups and hired and mentored many people who wanted to join our startup (Jem). Let me tell you this: Startups are not the glamorous, easy, or fun places some people make them out to be on social media. As much as I want to tell you that Jem is any different, it isn’t. Startups, by their very nature, are chaotic, unpredictable, and constantly changing. They are VERY hard places to work: → You must learn to accept that to move forward, sometimes you must go backwards. → You have to be ready to pivot, adapt, and learn new skills on the fly. → You have to realise it won’t be easy, and there will be times when you get it wrong. → You also have to accept that success is never guaranteed and that you may have to start over from scratch. This is hard. Sometimes, it’s an idea; sometimes, it’s your entire business (this happened to me multiple times). BUT, and there is a big BUT. For the right people, this can be the best job in the world. If you're ambitious, want to work hard, are willing to learn a ton and are keen to make the world a better place, you should think about it. → If you want a 9-5 job, don’t join a start-up. → If you want somewhere where work is always easy and everything always works, don’t join a start-up. But if you’re looking for a challenge, want to take on big projects and have deep responsibility for something, and importantly, are open to being wrong (a lot), maybe it’s for you. But before joining one, make sure it’s what you want. Do your due diligence. And please, please, don’t think it’s like the movies. It’s not. PS; We’re hiring. For many roles. When it comes to hiring as a pre-seed startup, timing and order can be as important as the people you bring onboard. Your first hires should align with your key early-stage objectives. For most startups, this involves developing your product, finding product-market fit, and growing initial customer base. So, hire a technical lead or a CTO first if you're building a tech product. They can help develop and technically validate your product idea. Next, consider hiring a marketing specialist or a growth hacker. They'll help get the word out about your product and attract your earliest users. Third, a salesperson can help bring in initial revenue, but they're not always needed right away. If you're a B2B startup, you might need a salesperson earlier than a B2C startup. Lastly, consider if you need operational roles, like HR or finance. Often, these responsibilities can be handled by the founders until the company scales. Remember, every startup is unique.
