Glasgow’s Health & Biotech sectors are booming with companies like Dxcover, Chemify Limited raising impressive rounds and Biomage Ltd joining the Seattle powerhouse of Parse Biosciences. Not to mention the impressive EnteroBiotix in Edinburgh commanding a huge raise last month to help the world with one of the most talked-about health issues at the moment - the gut microbiome. ?? Belfast continues to build on its success, securing significant investments and nurturing a thriving technology scene. The city's startups are not just surviving but thriving, drawing attention from international investors. Special mentions: Cloudsmith, for shouting out p5.js recently and of course for all the power they’re bringing coding teams. Nuada, its hard not to root for a company literally vacuuming up CO2. ?? Bristol, known for being one of the ‘coolest’ cities in the country has seen powerful climate tech-related funding rounds, further establishing the city as a leader in environmental innovation. Ten years ago, #JaylenBrown won a FIBA Americas Championship gold medal; the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was seven years into the Patrick Administration’s historic Massachusetts Life Sciences Initiative — a $1 billion investment over 10 years aimed at strengthening the state's life sciences sector; and Greentown Labs had just moved to #SomervilleMA with 25 cleantech startups. Today, Brown and the #Celtics are one win away from claiming the franchise’s 18th championship; Greater Boston is regarded as the global hub for life science innovation; and Greentown's Somerville incubator supports 125+ climatetech startups. Now, as we collectively look at the next decade of impact for Massachusetts, we’re on the precipice of greatness.?The House Ways and Means Committee is considering the #MassLeadsAct — the Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey's ambitious $1 billion, 10-year economic development bond bill. The Mass Leads Act will strengthen Massachusetts' long-standing position as a global leader in life sciences, and it will shout to the rest of the world that Massachusetts is equally committed to climatetech innovation and capitalizing on the enormous economic opportunity it presents for all. Is it a big investment? Yes, absolutely. Can we afford it? Bigger, existential question: can we afford not to? For the sake of our kids and the planet, probably not. So here’s to the Cs. Here’s to Title Town. And here’s to continuing to catalyze the climatetech revolution right here in the Commonwealth!

OpenGrid Technologies is redefining urban fast charging. Co-founders Nanbo Liu, Theo Hebblethwaite, and Wucheng (Mike) Wen, PhD are students at Georgetown University McDonough School of Business. I met the team last fall at the annual Bark Tank pitch competition hosted by Georgetown Entrepreneurship. They’ve raised $400,000 from gener8tor, U.S. Venture, Inc., AzureLeaf Investment, and The Ted Leonsis Family Entrepreneurship Prize. Why I’m excited about OpenGrid; - Hardware developed in-house. Their proprietary hardware is designed from the ground up to improve urban fast-charging accessibility. - Distribution channels. Early investors are creating channels for distribution to a network of commercial and institutional buildings allowing them to deploy quickly. - Easy to manage. OpenGrid manages and pays for equipment, permitting, installation, operation, and maintenance. - Fast charging in urban environments. The combination of grid and integrated lithium battery power supply helps increase the output by 50 kW.

Tomorrow I will be discussing the future in the water and waste water sectors at the World Water-Tech Innovation Summit. A discussion that will be more around technical innovation (crucial to reduce the amount of investment to be made in these sectors and to ensure affordability) and about financing (required upgrades will need to be financed not only by end-users/tariffs/price but also by producers).
