By providing urban farmers with resources, training, and networking, the goal is to increase access to USDA programs while building trust between producers and federal agencies. "What I have observed, not just through Steptoe Farm, but through other cooperative systems is that when you provide access to ownership and a sense of autonomy in what people do, you will get the best and most creative versions of them. Ownership is a powerful tool for keeping talented people in their community." Take a moment to hear Dominic Hosack's story on Power Station Podcast and be inspired. Deep into his academic studies about food systems and public health he decided to tackle food deserts in Black and Brown communities by becoming a producer himself. He founded Steptoe Farm, a cooperative, along the Patuxent River, where he grows abundant crops of produce, teaches neighbors to become growers and is a leading voice in a growing movement for food sovereignty. All of this is accomplished through cooperative ownership, which is expanding business opportunities and strengthening connections with other producers. Dom is now exploring ways to make housing affordable to those who want to become worker owners in Steptoe Farm and with other nearby producers. Together, as the Patuxent River Cooperative they are leveraging their collective power and finances to expand land acquisition. In other words, Dom and Steptoe Farm are changing food systems and looking to produce at a larger scale. He is an awardee of the Greater Washington Center for Employee Ownership's 2024 Annual DC Coop Impact Awards, an initiative of Rochdale Capital. That grant provided the capital needed to meet critical infrastructure needs on Steptoe Farm. It also connects Dom to support, guidance and new shared equity and cooperative networks. Farming for Personal Growth and Community Development Beyond my work with the Firmrock Initiative for farming and community development —particularly water solutions in dry, semi-arid areas—I have a personal passion for farming. I’m deeply interested in raising rabbits, goats, cattle, and geese. While some activities, like goose farming, may be challenging as a community project, every member of the Firmrock Initiative can learn from what I do and apply similar practices on their own farms. Many of my plans are connected to farming because I’ve noticed a concerning trend: people are leaving rural areas in search of greener pastures in towns and cities, leaving farming to their aging parents, who can no longer manage it alone. Why should society depend on buying food products when they have the capacity to produce them on their own farms? My personal goal is to establish a 20-acre mixed farming project, with at least 5 acres dedicated to community development and the Firmrock Initiative. It’s an ambitious vision, but one that requires significant funding and logistical support. However, as they say, a problem identified and written down is a problem half-solved! I believe in the power of community learning, and I’m committed to training and supporting others so we can all grow together. Last week, our Hatcher Station Training Farm welcomed a diverse group of visitors, including high-level executives from a prominent Dallas institution exploring potential partnership opportunities, a journalist from a local media outlet working on a story about food insecurity in Dallas, and a few other interested individuals. During farm tours, visitors often engage with our team members, inquiring about everything from production methods to the personal impact of their work.? A common question asked is how growing food for the community affects our farmers' sense of purpose and their vision for the future. This week, our young farmers, who are being trained to become the next generation of urban farmers, shared their thoughts and their ambitious goals with visitors. As one of our future urban farmers explained, they aspire to one day establish their own farms, take charge of their own destinies, and continue to serve the community while pursuing a fulfilling and financially sustainable career. With all the many details of running a financially sustainable professional urban farm, it's easy to get sidetracked. However, after 7 years of continued growth at Restorative Farms, we've come to appreciate the importance of taking a step back and re-examining our core purpose from time to time. These moments of reflection help us reconnect with our original mission and remind us that, while it's amazing and truly fulfilling to make a positive impact on individual lives, our ultimate goal is to achieve a replicable model for sustainable urban farming that benefits the larger community and the city.
