I applaud Vertex Pharmaceuticals for such great community programs! I must admit, I wish there were such programs for our at-risk youth. When I was growing up, there was a young lady in my neighborhood who also went to high school with me. This girl aced every math class offered. When the school offered access to local college classes, we ended up in the same college algebra class. I will always remember when she came in within her 'hood friend, picked up the syllabus and started to walk out. The professor asked, "What are you doing?!" The girl said, "Oh, no, I'm coming back for the quizzes and the final." He shook his head as she left. She attended 0 classes and got a A- due to poor attendance. Her boyfriend recruited her for his street pharmaceutical sales business; she ran with the rough neighborhood girls like Rabbit. Years later, I understand she got in legal trouble. There are plenty of kids like her. In St. Louis, groups of teenagers organized via social media and damaged several businesses; in those groups are tech-saavy strategists, influencers and more. If we could build programs that would be willing to work harder to nurture those gifts, our society as a whole would benefit immediately and immensely.
