https://lnkd.in/eZgKD9Ff Edmonton, AB, Canada--?Verne and its industry partners announced the completion of the first heavy-duty Class 8 truck powered by cryo-compressed hydrogen (CcH2). Verne’s CcH2 fuel storage system maximizes hydrogen storage density, increasing vehicle range while decreasing vehicle weight and storage system cost. Verne showcased the truck at the Alberta Motor Transport Association Innovation Expo in Edmonton, where fleets had the chance to inspect the completed truck. Verne will soon begin drive testing of the truck in advance of multiple commercial pilots.Verne’s cryo-compressed hydrogen technology involves cooling and compressing hydrogen to achieve the maximum hydrogen density of 73 g/L, a 33% improvement over liquid hydrogen and an 87% improvement over traditional 700 bar compressed gas hydrogen. Heavy-duty transportation is responsible for 12% of global CO2 emissions, and current zero emission options fail to meet the range and payload requirements of heavy-duty truck fleets. Increasing hydrogen density allows heavy-duty vehicles to store more energy onboard while using fewer heavy, expensive storage tanks. The first-of-kind cryo-compressed hydrogen truck uses Diesel Tech Industries’ Guardian Hydrogen Diesel System, which is a retrofit of a traditional diesel engine to enable the vehicle to run on a blend of diesel and hydrogen. DTI’s Guardian Hydrogen Diesel System can serve as an important bridge technology for the trucking industry, as it allows fleets to trial hydrogen fueling and driving without requiring investment in a new fleet of trucks.

Hydrogen powered barges, coastal craft, harbor craft, etc are relatively easy wins to decarbonize our ports and logistics networks. Transitioning these vessels will create demand to support port and logistics-related hydrogen infrastructure that will reduce the “range anxiety” associated with the transition to ZE operations. #sustainablelogistics #zeroemissions #cleanenergy

Alpine reveals Alpenglow Hy4 hydrogen combustion prototype at Spa. Based on a concept car first presented at the 2022 Paris Motor Show, the 340 PS Alpenglow Hy4 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder internal combustion engine fuelled by hydrogen. This is currently stored in gas form in three tanks, but Alpine plans to switch to liquid storage which it believes can be better integrated into the car and improve refuelling speeds. https://buff.ly/3USBUd4

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Class A Trucks - On the surface, hydrogen has always appeared to be a better application for Class A Trucks. It's going to be interesting to see what the future has in store for alternative fuel vehicles in our industry.

And if aircraft can fly on Fuel Cell tech, is the rest of the world far behind? How will this change the future of long haul, heavy load truck movement ? How will this affect the development of infrastructure in terms of refuelling stations and maintenance facilities? How is the automotive industry going to move forward on this essential requirement for minimising the adverse effects of #climatechange ? In many ways, there is a lot of hope hanging on hydrogen in the trucking industry. Fleets are desperate for a diesel-like, zero-emission propulsion option for heavy trucks. And despite some concerns, there is widespread optimism that hydrogen could provide fleets with those capabilities burned as a liquid fuel in internal combustion engines. It's really, really simple to prove that hydrogen as a power source works in a pilot environment (excuse the pun). Control all the variables, ignore the set-up and running costs, and proclaim the test a success. Commercialising this whilst also producing hydrogen cheaply enough, and safely enough, to make this a commercial reality is a much, much, bigger challenge. With cryogenic temperatures just a dozen or two degrees above absolute zero and the certainty of hydrogen burn off over time I believe this will never reach commercial viability. Makes a good story, though.
