?? ?? ?? About this week ?? ?? ?? The individual art that folks made as part of Brushes for Change was breathtaking. Ya’ll saw snippets of that earlier this week. But you know what was even more moving??? ??? Watching 40 ppl go from doing their own individual thing on the canvas to then co-creating a single piece of art together. What you see below is a picture of their finished product. Our current culture overemphasizes the individual frequently at the expense of the collective. We are taught to make it only about us. We sometimes find others who share similar traits as us. But the focus and bias in our thinking still skews towards “I”, which is only a piece of the truth. If something isn’t working, it must be “my fault.” If I want something then “I need to go for it or make it happen”, forgetting about how I might impact others or forgetting that “I am because we are”. #ubuntu #interdependence Justice is a co-creative process. As are feelings of inclusion and belonging. And as one passionate participant noted this week, “At some point, it doesn’t matter how much change I make on my own. I can’t always be doing this by myself. I need YOU to also do your part and change!” In Brushes for Change, I challenge folks to flip that script upside down and to sink deeply into co-creating together. It’s an experience of community care. It’s not easy to create together at first. Folks float in and out of a sweet & sour groove. But the experience is POWERFULLY TRANSFORMATIVE. Some have even said HEALING. To be held in community while exploring the most pressing issues of our time and taking time to identify where/how our inner worlds intersect is an act of resistance. And at that threshold is a ?? doorway ?? to justice, peace, and cultural understanding. Grateful for time well spent on Planet Earth?? Grateful that there are workplaces who are deeply committed to this work and call me in to do it with them ?? A ‘theory of change’ challenges our thinking about how the things we do are meant to achieve change. The aim of which is for people to be able to describe their intentions and their hopes regarding what they want to see happen. If you are designing a project for a group of intended users or participants, their voice in shaping it is critical. It touches on the principle of not doing to people, and ‘nothing about me without me.’ What we do is more affective if we consult with stakeholders, collaborators, users and beneficiaries – listening to and encouraging the voices of everyone. #SafeguardingAdultsWeek @AnnCraftTrust
