"In a bid to scale up efforts to combat climate change, Kenya has embarked on a new strategy involving greening her trade and consumption with focus on tea and coffee sectors. This is after it emerged that some trading practices within the value chain significantly contribute to environmental degradation as several studies reveal the extent of the sector's impact on climate." How does the world meet urgent targets to cut greenhouse emissions without harming vulnerable communities? The need for a just climate transition is coming to the forefront with new zero-deforestation regulations from the European Union (“the EUDR”) affecting tens of millions of smallholders worldwide. Smallholder farmers often manage their land using forest- and climate-friendly practices, but lack the resources to prove they do. As we push for greener policies, we must be sure that smallholder farmers are not left behind! In this Bloomberg article, learn more about the complex realities of building greener agricultural supply chains, and find some thoughts from Root Capital, which has been working to help prepare our clients for the new EUDR reality. https://lnkd.in/dE9XgNaC #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #ClimateFinance #ImpactInvesting #EUDR #SmallholderFarmers

Although there are many reasons why #coffee prices are rising at the moment, one thing above all is turbo charging the increases - extreme weather events and the effects of #climatechanage. Without concerted action to both mitigate #emissions and improve #adaptation, this situation will only get worse. The work we are doing at Nestlé in this area has a clear business, societal and scientific purpose - developing drought resistant coffee plantlets to cope with more extreme conditions and supporting farmers to switch to #regenerativeagriculture practices that help safeguard #soilhealth and #livelihoods. With #Brazil in the front line, we look forward to supporting the build up to #COP30 and its expected focus on land use and agricultural climate solutions. Ana Carolina Carregaro

Britain’s Climate Crisis: A Call for Change in 2024 In a bold recommendation, the UK’s Climate Change Committee (CCC) has declared a significant reduction in meat and dairy consumption essential to meet our net-zero goals by 2050. Here’s what the CCC suggests: 1?? 50% Reduction in Meat & Dairy The committee advocates a dietary shift to plant-based alternatives, aiming for a 50% cut by 2050. 2?? Livestock Reduction Sheep and cattle, major methane emitters, face possible cuts in subsidies and even advertising restrictions. 3?? CO2 Emissions Target The UK is on track for a 200 million-tonne reduction by 2035, aligning with the CCC’s aim of cutting emissions by 81% from 1990 levels. But, will the public embrace this change? Farmers like David Handley argue that methane from livestock pales in comparison to transport emissions. On the other side, voices like Claire Coutinho’s caution that these drastic steps risk fueling public discontent. ?? Join the conversation: Can the UK lead by example in the fight against climate change without sparking unrest? P.S.
