This last November, one of our RCD team members, Lauren Zaragoza, was able to attend the Santa Barbara TREX at the UCSB Sedgwick Preserve in Santa Ynez. Prescribed Fire Training Exchanges (TREX) and cooperative burns provide experiential training that builds robust local capacity for fire management and offers fire practitioners a more holistic perspective. These training exchanges (TREX), bring together multiple agencies such as tribes, fire departments, community members, landowners, environmental groups, researchers, etc. to implement community based and effective cooperative burning. She was able to attain her Firefighter Type 1 certification and participate on holding and ignitions team at two prescribed burn sites. The wording of the question matters! The Behavioral Assessment portion of the Firefighter Exam is designed to identify strengths and weaknesses in the desirable traits of successful firefighters. Many questions in this portion of the exam may sound similar, but the answers could be drastically different. Not understanding how to read and interpret the questions can mean the difference between being hired…and not! It’s Firefighter Safety Stand Down Week. Abandoned and condemned structures are high-risk buildings, and they are hazardous to firefighters and communities. Many high-risk buildings are structurally unsound and not safe for any person to enter. Firefighters are at increased risk of injury or death when responding to these types of buildings. Reduce the risk for firefighters by partnering with fire departments to address high-risk buildings. Learn more during National Safety Month: https://bit.ly/3xwfQw1

?? Firefighter Tip: Navigating tight spaces can be a real challenge during fireground operations. Removing your SCBA air pack when attempting a wall breach or moving from one small space to another can make all the difference! Here are the benefits: 1?? Increased Mobility: Removing your air pack allows you to move more freely and adapt your body position to fit through constricted areas. 2?? Reduced Risk of Getting Stuck: By streamlining your profile, you minimize the chance of getting caught on obstacles or debris during wall breaches. 3?? Enhanced Efficiency: Quickly and safely getting through tight spaces means you can focus on the task at hand – whether it’s rescue, fire suppression, or hazard containment. We covered this crucial skill today during our Firefighter Survival & RIT Training class at Firehouse Training in Eastern Ontario. Always practice this technique during drills to ensure you can execute it safely and effectively on the fireground. Train hard, stay safe, and be prepared for anything!???? #FirefighterTraining #SCBATips #FirehouseTraining

It was great to participate as part of the exercise planning team and having the opportunity to test Flagstaff Medical Center’s capabilities in response to a mass casualty incident. The collaboration and community partnership-building has been my favorite element of emergency management. Exercise is an opportunity to evaluate processes, or more specifically, identify strengths and areas for improvement in emergency response. Exercise is part of the improvement process, and inherently is what generates emergency management’s workload (in addition to real world incidents).
