How long does it take to create an online video based course? We could ask this question all the time. Let's imagine you already have an in person course. We recently produced a 10 hour course over 2 days with two professors and it was pretty leisurely. Next there's the reviewing of the material you already know and have delivered that content in person. So the only things you would really want to review are perhaps some of the graphics, maybe some questions, maybe some of the archive in our experience. That is 10 maximum 20% of the content of a course. The questions problem sets that might be involved. You already have that from your existing in person course and those can easily be put online. You might want to keep your course up-to-date. Even with current affairs courses that we've produced, that tends to be 10 to 20% of material that needs updating on let's say a yearly basis. There's a few options there. One is that's a good opportunity to have a live online seminar that you deliver each year with the fresh new material. Or you can prerecord it and do that on a yearly basis. But again, that will only be 10 to 20% of the content. So for a factor of between 1.2 and 1.6 times the amount of time it takes you to deliver that course in person, you can have an online video based course that anyone can do. At any time, if we've done our job well, that video based course is going to be engaging and educational and it's going to transfer the knowledge that you would want to get across in an in person lecture. If you have the sort of course we're tutorials and seminars feature, then that will free up time to devote in those tutorials and seminars to questions and feedback, which is the cornerstone of effective teaching.
