Interesting insight on what donor's consider when deciding nonprofits to support. Seems so far the diminishing trust factor has not impacted nonprofits quite as much as mistrust has effected other businesses and institutions -- yet. I take as an alert for nonprofit leader. We have a little more time to shore up processes, standards and methods that promote transparency and accountability so if and when there is a trickle down in perception, our organizations are not vulnerable. https://lnkd.in/euDexGW3

Sign up to be part of the story: In a few short months, the Nonprofit Finance Fund will be conducting the 2025 State of the Nonprofit Sector Survey to explore how nonprofits are faring in today's changing environment and the investments needed to secure their long-term futures. Key findings from the 2022 survey include:? 82% of respondents that identified as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color (BIPOC) reported long-term sustainability as a top challenge.? 12% of respondents’ annual expenses were less than $100K.? 65% of respondent’s ED/CEO identified as a woman.? 57% of BIPOC respondents represented one or more communities they serve, in comparison to 18% of white-led organizations.? Participating in surveys like this give nonprofits an opportunity to be heard and provide valuable information to funders to make informed decisions on how to best support nonprofits. https://lnkd.in/gGXe9_ce

So what do YOU think are the biggest mistakes new nonprofits make. This article offers a list and it's instructive. That said, it is missing what I consider to be the two biggest mistakes. (1) Folks who start nonprofits do little to no homework on the landscape - who else is in this sector? What are they doing well? Is my idea a standalone org or could it be a program? Why can't I get involved, work for, financially support an organization that is already mature and doing great work? (2) Folks who start nonprofits do not start with real intentionality before writing the names of the 3-5 people you need to list as part of the 501c3 application. Who is on your board from day one MATTERS. It's not just an item to check off on an application. See what you think of this list. https://lnkd.in/e4dfWDCB

Excellent read regarding the role nonprofits can play when it comes to policy change. “Still, nonprofit 501c3s can play an important role. By widening the aperture of what is considered “economic policy” work, these nonprofits can build from their existing strengths. Specifically, we’ve found that nonprofits are best positioned to leverage their networks, and deploy communication channels and program expertise to work with others around policy strategies.”
