Unlike other fast-paced markets, our industry requires years of careful planning and patience. Identifying a promising new apple variety, planting the trees and waiting three years or more for the first crop is a complex, capital-intensive and high-stakes process. Yes, ripping out an established orchard to gamble on an unproven cultivar is an enormous risk. But growers must weigh this against the dangers of an even bigger risk: clinging to a variety that is no longer meeting consumer tastes. Dr Hugo Britt shared a summary of the "Short-term strategies for long-term gains" panel discussion from the APAL Industry Forum in the upcoming Spring 2024 edition of AFG - https://lnkd.in/gBabTda8 AgFirst horticultural consultants Ross Wilson and Sarah de Bruin shared data from the Orchard Business Analysis (OBA) and their insights into short-term strategies for long term gains with us at the APAL Industry Forum in Melbourne on 3 June 2024 - https://lnkd.in/gkfrA9E6

Strategy in declining industries… Building on my ramble yesterday about potential lessons from plant ecology where I concluded that in the face of stress (high cost of capital) and disturbance (industry disruption), your best bet is to join the disruption. But I think it potentially misses a key question… What to do about legacy business in an industry that is being disrupted and (at least segments of it are) in decline? In Michael Porter’s ‘Competitive Strategy (1980), 4 approaches are suggested depending on the industry structure through the decline and strengths for competing in remaining pockets: 1) favourable + strong = leadership or niche 2) favourable + weak = Harvest or divest quickly 3) unfavourable + strong = Niche or harvest 4) unfavourable + weak = Divest quickly He also adds a third dimension about broader considerations about staying in the industry… … “Strategic needs for cash flow, for example, may skew the decision towards harvest or early sale…” Given no viable strategy exists in the face of stress and disturbance for plants, then perhaps the best bet is to harvest or quickly divest the disrupted to fund joining the disruption?
