.?My Philosophy on Education: Emphasizing Experiential Knowledge My philosophy on education prioritizes experiential knowledge over purely cerebral understanding. While traditional education often emphasizes rote memorization and theoretical concepts, I believe that true learning occurs when students engage directly with their environment and apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. For instance, consider a science class where students learn about ecosystems. Instead of merely reading about biodiversity, I advocate for field trips to local parks or nature reserves. Here, students can observe various species in their natural habitats, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of ecological relationships. This hands-on experience not only enhances retention but also ignites curiosity and critical thinking. Another example is in vocational training programs. Students learning carpentry benefit immensely from hands-on projects where they design and build furniture. This practical application of skills reinforces theoretical concepts while also preparing them for future careers. Moreover, internships provide invaluable experiential learning opportunities. Students gain insights into professional environments, developing soft skills like communication and teamwork that are often overlooked in traditional classrooms. In essence, education should be a dynamic process that connects theory with practice, empowering students to become active students in their learning journey. By prioritizing experiential knowledge, we cultivate not just informed individual students but also engaged students ready to tackle real-world challenges.

?? Pondering Career Readiness in K-12 Education: Learning from Rural West Virginia ?? As education evolves, the importance of career readiness, exploration, and awareness in K-12 settings has never been clearer. Schools are no longer just preparing students for graduation??—they’re launching them into lifelong pathways of success??. But how do we best equip students, particularly in rural areas, where opportunities may seem more limited, yet the potential for impact is enormous? In reflecting on rural communities like those we’ve worked with in West Virginia, we’ve identified three best practices that stand out: 1?? Community-Driven Partnerships??: Schools in rural WV have forged powerful relationships with local businesses, industries, and community organizations, providing students with internships, mentorships, and hands-on exposure to in-demand careers. 2?? Place-Based Learning??: Rural schools often leverage their unique environments—whether it’s agriculture, energy, or tourism—to teach students skills directly tied to local economies, while also emphasizing transferable competencies (like entrepreneurship!??) 3?? Early and Consistent Career Exploration??: Programs that start as early as middle school encourage students to explore their interests and aptitudes, leading to more informed decision-making for CTE pathways that align with their passions and strengths. ??I’d love to hear from others: What are your most effective practices, models, or resources for career readiness in K-12 education? By the time students walk into their first-period classrooms today, they’ve likely swiped through numerous notifications from social media apps. They’ve navigated morning interactions at home, on buses, and in hallways, often starting the day sleep-deprived and anxious. These factors can prime them to be disengaged and distracted in class, right from the start. But as a middle or high school teacher, you know this well. Capturing and maintaining students’ attention each day can feel like running a marathon amidst constant distractions. Teaching in a way that fosters genuine learning is challenging, especially with the hurdles of today’s environment. However, offering students hands-on experiences outside the classroom where they can apply their knowledge is a powerful strategy to counter these challenges. Experiential learning opportunities provide students with experiences that develop lifelong skills, adaptability to new situations, and mastery of subjects. As a teacher, you’ve likely witnessed firsthand how these experiences transform abstract concepts into concrete understanding, much like your own internships and practical experiences did during your education. It’s one thing to lecture about historical events like the American Revolution, but quite another to immerse students in locations where history was made—standing in the room where the Declaration of Independence was signed, exploring the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, or walking the grounds of Valley Forge. I have long argued that students need to unite those worlds. From schools to universities, timed exams remain a prevalent method of gauging student knowledge and skills. All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others…. No equity in assessments. We have exams in school, in colleges, in apprenticeships, in universities, and in many professional parts of our lives. Formal, timed, written, closed book examinations remain the commonest method of educational assessment that many educational settings employ to gauge a student’s level of subject based knowledge, ability and skills following a course of study.#Neurodiversity #Assessment #Education

Empathy is the foundation of humanity — and community is at the centre of learning. Learning is not one-way; it is a conversation. It is a discourse — theorems can be taught but they cannot be learned until applied. It starts out small — we tweak the curriculum to introduce ‘ideas’. Not only theorems. One of our most impactful additions has been the mandatory ‘Social Internship’ for all undergraduate students at Manav Rachna University. Learning is not an isolated incident — so it must happen within the community it branches out of. It must happen with people — with their problems. In my eyes, community service is non-negotiable. A no-brainer. The goal, at the end of the day, is to create humane characters — the journey should be steeped in empathy.
