When having Stand Up Comedy at your company party or event, less is often more. Attending a comedy night at the club, its usual to see a 2 hour show with some break in the middle. At your party, we don't have that much time. Stand Up is just part of the entertainment that evening and we don't have an hour or even 45 minutes for a long performance. This is why we recommend most performances are either 15 minutes or 25 minutes. 15 if you need a quick hit of laughs or if it's a sit down event where the audience will have a longer attention span, 25 minutes works great. When comedians perform at private events they have specially crafted sets which are designed to be short, sharp and funny. A good comedian doesn't need 5 minutes to warm up, they are throwing out clever punchlines from the get-go.

How are stand-up comedians faring with the boom in social media comedy? Bloomberg has it that stand-up comedy trebled in 10 years. Much of this is due to COVID-19 and the fact that comedians had no work, so resorted to SM. That aside, NETFLIX has played a role, offering up-and-coming comedians a platform to reach the world. But how do NETFLIX find their comedy stars? Why, social media, of course! With social media now, the days of sitcom stars being the only ones out there doing their bit for comedy are history. Much hard work and plenty of posts gives social media comedians access to a wider audience, and the pressure is not on them to make everyone laugh all at once. They build up their following in their own time. There is pressure though… SM platforms censor bad language and sensitive issues. So, what’s a man, or girl, to do? Censor their posts and lose engagement? Algorithms too, put pressure on SM comedians to come up with regular posts that are short and succinct. But, there’s enough silver to cross your palm and make a living on SM, and many are happy just to stay there and reap the rewards. What I Gained from Doing Stand-Up Comedy Years ago, I took a comedy class from a professional comedian. During the week-long evening course, I learned to tell a joke, use a microphone, and write a five-minute set. On the final evening, we held a comedy show. It was exciting and nerve-wracking. The weekend before the show, I spent hours practicing my five-minute set in front of my bathroom mirror, talking into my hairbrush. I wrote, polished, and rewrote my set. I nailed my first joke and could feel the support of my friends, about 40 people. The place was packed with other friendly faces, filling the venue with 100+. I floated through my set and killed. Sounds of real laughter echoed around me. It was one of the most exciting and rewarding things I have done. When I signed up for the class, I wanted a fun outlet. But what I got was so much more. I remembered how much I love to make people laugh, and my self-confidence soared. Doing stand-up helped my career. I renewed my faith in my public speaking abilities, handling objections (hecklers in the case of comedy), and remembering to believe in myself and what I have to offer, not just as an experienced professional but also as an authentic team member with a unique perspective, personality, and valuable contribution. #standupcomedy #selfconfidence #publicspeaking #authenticity
