What Was My Worst "No"? Looking back, I’ve said “No” to some opportunities that were ultimately for the best—like declining a 7th interview with Gartner for an analyst role. As the most “non-analyst” analyst I know, that decision worked out well for both sides. But the worst “No” of my career? That takes me back to my early days as a systems administrator at the Chicago Tribune. I was offered the chance to manage a $250K project (around $500K in today’s dollars) to implement a new tape library and data protection solution. I turned it down. Why did I say “No”? Honestly, it felt like a lose/lose scenario. It was a backup project—high stakes but low glory. If I succeeded, no one would notice. If I failed, it would have been a very public disaster. Why was this my worst “No”? Managing projects is a core skill for any enterprise architect or senior leader. That was my chance to cut my teeth on a complex initiative early in my career, and I let it slip away. In hindsight, saying no to that opportunity likely set my career back a couple of years. Sometimes, the lessons we learn come from the decisions we don’t make.

As I was looking at a job that was out of my reach, I came up with the following prompt. Find a job you'd like to have in the future. Maybe it's the $250K+ per year Director of Project Controls role at Microsoft shared in this weeks newsletter. Use the below prompt. Assume the role of a recruiter in the construction industry with 15 years experience. Please review the job requirements below and my attached resume. Identify where my qualifications do not align with the job's demands, and offer actionable recommendations for acquiring these skills or experience. Ask me 3 questions prior to beginning that will help you provide the best feedback. Paste the prompt, job requirements and your resume. Be amazed. Choose the most interesting and relevant feedback to work on. Bonus points if you use multiple jobs to discover trend across companies for similar roles. In addition to three interesting jobs each week, we'll share a prompt for improving planning tactics.
