November is recognized as National Veterans and Military Family Month, a time that resonates deeply with me as both a veteran and a former military spouse. I know firsthand the resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication required not just from those in uniform, but from their families who stand strong behind them. Creating veteran- and military-spouse-friendly workplaces isn’t just a professional commitment—it’s personal. Here’s why it matters and how to make a difference: 1. Offer a VARIETY of Flexible Work Options: Military life can mean sudden moves and deployments. Flexible work arrangements provide stability for spouses to build and sustain careers. 2. Teach, Encourage and Incentivize Inclusive Hiring: Understanding and translating #military experience into civilian roles is vital. Organizations should engage with military job boards, military service organizations and targeted hiring efforts. Hiring Managers should also be trained in how to avoid potential bias for when they see gaps in employment and how to recognize skills-based resumes over traditional, chronological resumes. 3. Offer Flexible Growth Opportunities: Tailored and customized career pathing and professional development options supports #veterans in adapting their #leadership and mission-focused skills to civilian roles. Same goes for #militaryspouses and #caregivers. 4. Cultivate Work Cultures of Connection, Community and Belonging: #ERGs and support networks create spaces where #veterans, spouses, caregivers and #militaryfamilies feel seen and supported - both at work and at home. Back in 2017, this was part of my official mission as a #federalemployee working for the #federalgovernment. And now more than ever, it's time we unite to create inspired workplaces that truly honor their service, dontcha think? Did you know that Veteran unemployment is at historic lows? For seven consecutive months last year, Veteran unemployment rates were below 3%.This is a result of many factors, in particular, Veteran-hiring promotion efforts of nonprofit organizations, employer and industry-led coalitions, private firms and Department of Defense programs. The bad news is that Veteran underemployment is upwards of 30% to 45%, 15.6% higher than higher than non-Veteran job seekers. We hire veterans (and so can you!) Do you want to hire veterans? Here are a couple tips for how you can increase your veteran hiring and unlock a talent pool of hardworking, professional candidates. -- 1) Consider transferrable skills. Military resumes may look different than civilian ones, but relevant skills are still there! Check out the military crosswalk tool to help you translate military skills to civilian ones and ask veterans during the interview about they did day-to-day in the military. https://lnkd.in/gxgG3mAt 2) Find local veteran employment partners. We work closely with Texas Veterans Commission and their employment representatives are part of a nationwide network of veteran advocates. Shout out to some of our local contacts Carlton Robinson, Jessica Buerger, Paul Julio, Phillip Caldwell, Keith Callands. You can also tap into a nationwide network such as U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, shout out to Diane Tu. These great people send us veteran job seekers every day. 3) Attend veteran hiring events. We attend many free veteran hiring events every year. If you're just getting started, I recommend looking into the statewide "Red White and You" held in November. (https://lnkd.in/ga4ta-b6) 4) Find an internal champion. It kills me that Erich Butler wasn't able to attend this event. He's worked hard here at Peak to educate and inspire our staff to hire more veterans. Seek out an internal staff member like Erich who can talk about the unique lived experience of veterans as well as the unique employment barriers they face. 5) Be disability-friendly. Many veterans have acquired a disability as a result of service to their country. Whether they're missing a leg or managing PTSD, we can thank them for their service by making our workplaces more disability-friendly, accessible, and open to accommodations. -- Did you know there is a statewide award for employers who employ at least 10% veterans?
