Today, When She Thrives office is closed to stand in solidarity with Women and Girls Foundation and Paid Leave for All for A Day Without Women. Before I made the decision to take this stand, I thought long and hard about what #adaywithoutwomen really means, specifically for the nonprofit sector. Women make up more than half the CEO’s of nonprofits with budgets under 1 million dollars. This means that women are the ones leading organizations that are constantly seeking funding to stay afloat, to ensure the impactful and transofmationational work we do in this world doesn’t end. This means women are the ones making sure, by any means necessary that funders are told AGAIN and AGAIN how important our work is, even when the importance was acknowledged just a year before. This means when women take a day off to take a stand we are challenged by the need to show up for the individuals and families and communities we serve may not get what they need, because we’re trying to get WHAT WE NEED so that we can get them what they need. This means even when we take a stand, our minds are still running marathons with thoughts about how to keep going, keep growing, keep surviving until we’re thriving. This means, even whe we choose to take a stand, we’re tired and want to sit. This means, even though we’re passionate and invested in the work we do, we’re often struggling with crippling anxiety, stress and overwhelm. This means, the system remains broken. This means today, AND EVERY DAY we take a stand to continue to hold each other up. #empoweringwomen #womenleaders #nonprofitleadership

Their mission extends beyond mere redevelopment; they foster connections between local businesses, nonprofits, and the community. Near Southside has partnered with us on two fronts as: 1. Business Association (T1T Community Leader): They lead the charge in empowering their city by uniting businesses and driving positive change through the That1Things platform. 2. Near Southside Arts (Nonprofit Arm): Their vision? To be Fort Worth’s creative epicenter—a hub for artistic expression. Active Listening is a thread that runs through so many powerful interactions. I'm working on a Respect in the Workplace Workshop- Active Listening is a component. Last Week in preparation for a Trust Session- Active Listening was a critical component and on and on. Active Listening is a Superpower that we all need to master. The subset of Active Listening that I work on constantly is: listening to understand and not respond! Whew ! Having that legal/employee relations lens where I'm formulating rebuttals in my head makes this one particularly difficult but i'm pleased to say I'm continually improving and I am learning so much by listening to understand. Many nonprofits are focused on improving the lives of women, children, and other underserved groups. For me, this highlights the critical need for women to be present at the decision-making table. Equally, having a board that includes individuals from the communities the organization serves can be a powerful force for change. I work with nonprofits of all shapes and sizes, and I truly believe we should concentrate on fostering collaboration and inclusivity to drive real progress. For women of color to survive what has passed and what is ahead in election year 2024, we need access to spaces that provide community, healing, and sustainable work opportunities. Thank you to Dr. Sayu Bhojwani for putting into words what so many of us are feeling. "Many women of color lead #nonprofits, especially the smallest organizations. An estimated 28 percent of those with budgets below $50,000 have women of color at the helm, according to an analysis by Candid that was shared with the?Chronicle of Philanthropy. The analysis was based on data Candid received from 50,000 nonprofits during the past five years. Given this, the well-being of these leaders should be a philanthropic priority. At its most basic level, that means giving our organizations the funding they need to succeed, valuing our time, and respecting our desire to work in our communities and stay home, rather than being on a constant roadshow to raise money." In her article, Sayu mentions three things philanthropic funders should do to support women of color: provide opportunities for women of color to gather with their peers, embrace different leadership models, and engage with other staff - not just leaders.
