As threatened, a "lesson" (which may be also about party planning): Organizations need “summit” moments, those annual retreats, leadership dinners, and staff recognition parties that provide the highlight reel making it worth grinding through all the behind-the-scenes slog. Pulling off a memorable and meaningful event is truly rewarding – possibly a signature achievement. Recently, I had the opportunity to plan a Centennial Gala for the Woman’s National Democratic Club, founded by suffragists and fellow women Democrats in 1922. Covid had torpedoed all efforts to plan for the milestone, and a professional event planner friend cautioned me that a gala like I was envisioning would typically take years to plan. But I decided to start up the totally stalled project anyway. We met virtually and in person, cajoled volunteers, and eventually, a multi-generational special events committee stepped up to the task. At a gala party 100 years after our founding, we filled the club house in our finest attire and honored three Democratic women on the Jan 6 Select Committee. As I emceed the evening, shoehorning in an unplanned-but-humorous appearance by Congressman Jamie Raskin, I took energy from the attentive club members aged 22 to 92. It was a triumph. Quantification of the lead-up effort isn’t the point, massive publicity isn’t the point, slick themes running through every element isn’t the point. Rather, success looks like an event that speaks to the soul of the community. It should reflect consideration, effort, and investment. I couldn’t have been prouder personally or professionally of what the Centennial Gala represented: a summit moment. #eventplanning #communitybuilding #womeninpolitics #democrats #centennialgala

Full house just a few hours ago for MPI Potomac Chapter March e2: She Thrives: A Roundtable Discussion with Women in Hospitality & Events and I was truly like a little LaJoy in the #womenempowerment candy store since it is rare, due to my travels that I can attend a #networking event. In addition to connecting with some of my fellow Smart Meetings women and some beloved colleagues (hey there Tara Melvin), a few things stood out to me. --The 80/20 rule which I fully agree with. Ready? Here is the secret sauce. Success is 80% #mindset and the rest is skill. --The importance of a self-care rituals whether it be before or after your event or busy season. Personally, for me, I have a pretty serious daily routine on event days and a post-event ritual. How about you? --Raise your hand if you know that one person does not get to dictate your path, future, or your destiny? Yes, during the audience question and answer portion we got into this topic. Oh, and I have good news! You just you are the executive producer of your life and career. --And last but not least, how to rebuild after life trauma or loss which came across clearly as one panelist shared powerfully her personal loss. This spoke to the #survivor in me and I know so many of us can relate. My recap does not do the discussion justice, you kind of had to be there. The hour was full and learnings abundant, but you know what really got me going? The range of women (and men) in attendance, how collectively we have all had struggles and yet, found our way to better days. Do you know what I mean? As I left, I was reminded that women always need each other, meaningful mentorship is essential in our career journey, and that thriving is inevitable and available to all of us.
