When it comes to nuclear power, think small. Finally, people are getting over their fears and designing better and smaller and more efficient devices for creating megawatts of power. Yes, nuclear power can be used safely. We just needed to rethink the way we do things. https://lnkd.in/dK7G85Vk

I attended the Monte Jade Science & Technology Association of Taiwan board meeting last night, and the chairman, T.H. Tung, shared?many of his views on nuclear power. MJSTA is Taiwan's most influential science and technology association. T.H. Tung is the current chairman of the board of directors and Pegatron's chairman. He has a good relationship with the Democratic Progressive Party and is an essential DPP's think tank corporate representative. I'm very honored to be the convenor of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship group of MJSTA. Chairman Tung has been shouting lately that Taiwan's electricity is insufficient and that nuclear power must be restored. In failing to reflect the?urgency, he mentioned Finland's #OL3 technology, or #SMR, as a potential solution.? Chairman Tung's remarks were noted because the DPP has always taken an anti-nuclear stance, creating a significant crisis for Taiwan. Taiwanese companies are already moving out of Taiwan. With the current blackouts in the country, it's essential to have a DPP businessman with an anti-nuclear stance to challenge the policy. Chairman Tung said that he was responding to the real problems of the enterprises and hoped that the government would put politics aside and face up to the issue of power shortage, which will be the biggest challenge of Lai Ching-te since he took office. ?? Given Taiwan's electricity shortage, I wrote in the Commercial Times that Taiwan should import electricity, and it should come from Mainland China. If Taiwan doesn't restore nuclear power, renewable energy will not be able to support the economy's development, and it will have to slow down the pace of investment in semiconductor AI.? Mainland China's Fujian province is near Taiwan, where more than 50% of the electricity is green, including hydroelectricity, offshore wind, and nuclear power. If green power can be exported to Taiwan, it will solve the power problem and provide clean energy.? There was already an example of water transfer between Fujian and Kinmen in Taiwan, and a pipeline for water transfer was established a few years ago. Therefore, the transfer of electricity is not a technical issue but a political issue. Putting aside political prejudices, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait can actively cooperate?in green energy and power, which may create a win-win situation. After all, Mainland China is the world's leading place in developing a green economy and clean energy. Teaching sustainability to a toddler in a toilet, who is having a go at the water with a tumbler and a bucket. It hurts; I hate wasting water. My rule is to say no more than 3 'No's' a day. I ration them like it's a nuclear stockpile. "If you throw all the water out with the tumbler," I start, "the water will go down the drain, And get finished. Play time over." "But, if you find a way to throw the water back into the bucket, You can play on and on and on. And playtime never needs to end." And you see him modify his game. And you wonder how executive-level folks and leadership folks need help with understanding this. Sustain-ability is, quite simply, your ability to sustain something. How is ecoparenting not a term? #Parenting #sustainability #TinyToddlerTales

Next week the Amplio Community of Practice will continue discussing common challenges and myths. Last week, we had a good conversation about complexity, Cynefin, and Amplio’s approach to working in complex environments. We needed more time so this next session will continue the conversation. Let me provide a disclaimer – I am not an expert on Cynefin. However, I do believe the general approach of saying we’re in one type of domain or another domain is not effective. A more actionable way to look at it is to think of systems as a collection of relationships between the components of the system. We can characterize these relationships as simple (clear cause and effect relationship), complicated (several causes and effects working together), and??complex (we can’t understand the relationships at the moment). All of these relationships can also have non-linearity—that is, a small event can create a big result. This happens in different ways. A single event can create a big problem (eg, the camel that broke the camel’s back). A combination of simple events can create a big problem (eg, raindrops causing a flood). Or a cascading sequence of little events can create a big problem (eg, an avalanche). We can state that a complex system is one where complexity plays a significant role in how it behaves – making it unpredictable. One can think of complex systems as being: 1) something that impacts us but over which we have no control (e.g., the weather) 2) Societal behavior which we are embedded in but over which control is impossible. 3) Complex systems such as nuclear reactors where we don’t have full visibility due to complexity and often can’t change the devices as we need to in real time 4) Knowledge work where we have great control. Since knowledge work is complex, we must recognize that we can’t fully predict what’s going to happen – or even if what we’re trying to do is the right thing. We have some capability, but not 100%. An easy way to make this point is to use the concept of VUCA – Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. Talking about this is straightforward and people can readily relate to these terms. This is why feedback is so critical. Although one may not be able to plot a course that’s always on track, by attending to where you want to go and where you are actually headed, you will be pretty efficient. We should recognize the problem we have is not complexity but non-linear events. Complexity causes lack of visibility when these events start occurring. But if we get quick feedback we can avoid them. When we think we’re in a complex environment where we can’t see what’s going on we disempower ourselves. But when we recognize we can see many relationships and that feedback will provide us the visibility on what is needed to course-correct, we can stay true on course. The bottom line is we must recognize that we’re in a complex system. But we don’t have to label everything in the system as complex. #cynefin #amplio
