?? Are we losing sight of the true goals of waste management??? The article from Johann Fellner, Paul H. Brunner and Astrid Unterberger highlights a critical gap in the field of waste management (WM): the distinction between goals and means is often overlooked. While methods like circular economy and waste hierarchy are valuable tools, they shouldn’t replace the fundamental objectives of WM—namely, protecting human health and the environment, and conserving resources. This review conducts a historical analysis of west management goals and evaluates their representation in scientific publishing, specifically within Waste Management and Research. The findings reveal that, despite 63 publications referencing WM goals over 40 years, only a small number explicitly discuss these essential aims. The authors call for a greater focus on waste management goals in research and publishing. By elevating these discussions, Waste Management and Research has the potential to become a key platform for advancing effective waste management practices.
