The Future of Philanthropy is Young! Jeremiah Steen once told me that this is the best world to take risks, to test out new hypotheses for the world's potential, and give that first push to someone's career. How can we do any less than to fully empower young people in every asset of this field? For Elders in the Non-Profit Sector, how are you held accountable by those under 25 within the communities you serve? Are we on your boards? Have we reviewed and approved of the language you use to describe us in your grants? Most importantly, what are you doing to build the trust required to build a world that will honor your legacy?

Before Sam Gill took the top job at the Doris Duke Foundation, he spent more than a decade overseeing grant making at the Knight Foundation, where he was witness to plenty of philanthropy trends. Like any investor, he says, foundations must have a clear view of risks and desired returns. In some cases, the goals of a nonprofit might overlap with a foundation’s. But nonprofit leaders will always want the least-restrictive, highest-dollar grant it can receive. Foundations can’t afford to think that way, Gill says. The funders we partner with see their programs improve and the grant seekers we review raise more money for their missions. ?We need a strong board to help us amplify the impact of our first decade. What we are looking for: *Commitment to our mission to demystify grant-making. *Innovative, talented professionals with an interest in grant proposal review. *Expertise in nonprofit management, philanthropy, or grant-making. *Willingness to leverage personal networks to drive our mission forward. Every year, the vast majority of grant proposals that are written and submitted are unceremoniously rejected without any feedback provided.
