I attended the Front Office Sports Future of Sports panel yesterday on the growth of women’s sports across investment, branding, and media rights. These are my takeaways: ?? Investment in storytelling: Brands are shifting focus to narratives around athletes and leagues. With women’s sports experiencing unprecedented growth. ? Fandom evolution: Fans follow athletes and women’s sports broadly, rather than just one team or league. Women athletes are building brands around what they advocate for outside their sport. ?? Media opportunities: Women’s sports are seeing a surge in media coverage—from 4% (2023) to 15% (2024) of TV programming in a year— viewership is soaring. The more accessible women’s sports become, the more eyeballs they attract. ?? Closing the gender pay gap: Female college athletes excel in commercial deals—58% of NIL activities are for women’s sports—but collective earnings lag. Education, policy, and systemic change are needed to drive parity and unlock more opportunities for women in sports. ?? Antonin Ficatier, editorial director for Western Europe, recently shed light on how Gen Z is transforming the landscape of live sports viewership, particularly in the context of the Olympics in The Current. "It's important to understand that Gen Z loves sports and watching sports, but they're just watching them differently compared to previous generations," he says. Great week at Soccerex in Miami discussing trends in football and rocking Chelsea Football Club's brand new Fever-logo jersey. I thoroughly enjoyed the engaging conversation with Misha Sher, Ben Forrest, Scott R., and James Tree about the evolving landscape of fan engagement in football. A key theme was how new media is reshaping the way people consume live sports, particularly among younger audiences, who are attending fewer stadium games. However, there's another equally important perspective: younger generations are embracing live experiences more broadly than ever before—just not always in traditional settings. This creates an exciting challenge for the industry: how can we creatively market and introduce live sports to younger audiences in a way that resonates with their preferences? It's about finding a balance—being present on their phones while also offering compelling reasons to put their phones down and fully immerse themselves in the moment. Looking forward to exploring innovative solutions to bridge this gap and bring a new wave of fans into the stadiums.

Having just played our annual slopitch tournament this past weekend, it made me reflect on the similarities of building teams both in sports and in companies. Tom Webster CPA, CA, ICD.D once used the analogy of building a team/department like you would build the Canucks lineup. Being a sports enthusiast, I realized how important it is to ensure you have the right mix of skills and experience to build a championship sports team as well as a high-performance team. From my perspective it's important to have the high potential rookies working closely with and learning from the wiley experienced veterans. It's important to have those with specific technical skills (i.e. the skilled player), excellent communication and soft skills, and leaders. And of course, a great coach/leader to guide the team, bring the best out of them, and help elevate their performance. When you have a diverse team who collaborate towards a common goal, you have a winning team. So what would your 'championship' team look like?
