"The Destruction of Black Civilization" is a seminal work by Chancellor Williams, first published in 1974. The book is a comprehensive history of the African diaspora, spanning from ancient Egypt to the modern era. Williams' central argument is that the transatlantic slave trade and European colonization led to the deliberate destruction of Black civilizations, cultures, and identities. He contends that this destruction was not only physical but also psychological, leading to a legacy of oppression and self-doubt. The book explores the rich cultural heritage of ancient Africa, the devastating impact of slavery and colonialism, and the struggles of Black people to reclaim their history and identity. Williams also critiques the Eurocentric bias in traditional historiography, arguing that it has perpetuated a distorted view of African history and culture. Through meticulous research and compelling narrative, Williams aims to empower Black people to reclaim their past, challenge dominant narratives, and forge a new sense of self and purpose. "The Destruction of Black Civilization" remains a powerful and influential work, essential reading for anyone interested in African history, culture, and the ongoing struggle for social justice.

I wanted to share the recent NCSAScholars submissions call. For those who might be interested, below is a summary of details as well as a link to the official NCS call for submissions. Deadline: 15 August, 2024; Publication Date: 2025. "NCS Volume 37 (2025) – Special Issue: Blackness, Race, and Racism in Nineteenth-Century Studies. This special issue will explore how Blackness was constructed and problematized by a hegemonic global structure across national boundaries during the long nineteenth century. The issue will pay particular attention to emerging concepts of Black identities during this period. Critically, majority narratives have driven these constructions, propagating mediated histories that subjugate Black people, yet the full impact of these narratives has not been thoroughly explored and needs additional interrogation. Essays might consider topics related to images, texts, other forms of media, or more. Possible topics could include expressions of Black autonomy in white supremacist cultures; colonialism/decolonization; trauma studies; slavery/emancipation; Black soldiers; Black artists/photographers/writers; the development and expression of stereotypes; the practice of lynching; transatlantic migration and the Black diaspora; and other relevant subjects."

We as African people are at a historical disadvantage because we were never given an economic leg up through financial reparations after slavery. We were promised 40 acres and a mule but the United States went back on their word and released the slaves with no economic foundation. The Homestead Act of 1862 granted European immigrants 160 acres of free land free of charge that they had snatched away from the Native Americans while placing them in Indian reservations. So, former slaves received no financial footing and White immigrants received free land. The 2024 Results: White people have a median net worth of $280,000 and African Americans have a median net worth of less than $40,000 which means that most Black people are in the same financial position they were in during Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. Black entertainers like Tyler Perry and Black athletes like LeBron James are soaring financially but the vast majority of African Americans are struggling financially. The Answer: Uplift the entire African American community by providing a coalition of Black millionaires and Black billionaires who will provide financing for the vast majority of Black people who will hire Black people and the Black community at large will patronize. The Black spending dollar is worth $1 trillion dollars and if we redirect our spending it will create a nation of millionaires. Drawing from law, literature, history, philosophy, and popular culture, 2023 #MacFellow Imani Perry explores how Black Americans have resisted, survived, and thrived by forging singular paths in the face of oppression and injustice. Imani has described her work as, "An effort to haunt the past by honoring the nobility of the disregarded." In this clip, she speaks about how history as a field of study often fails to account for the myriad resources and stories of Black people, and how she uses ingenuity and creativity to illuminate often overlooked facets of historical and contemporary culture. My god Julian Thompson ?? Talking about being grounded in present realities and envisioning abundant futures, where new worlds are made for black people. Camp Digital, this human is a poet. Recognising the voices and needs of people who are marginalised is imperative, especially in our “sociodigital” world, where the need to understand the social context of people’s lives, and the ways in which digital shifts and shapes it is essential. Yet, different groups live in very different worlds, and not everyone gets to dream about the future, in a hopeful, positive way. So who gets to dream up what the world will look like? What happens to the black communities who often are reacting to crises? We need to think differently about how we create. Using existing structures - from algorithms to digital colonisation - only replicates and reinforces the different worlds we live in. So, how do we get to new ways of being, living and working? The Afrofuturism advocated by Rooted By Design is imagining new and alternative worlds, that are liberating, beyond the exhausting experience that is in living in the worlds others create. History, spirituality, culture and joy all play a part in black people shaping their own futures… It’s so exciting to see resisting homogenisation and cultural erasure plus dismantling power as key principles, not to mention the agency of black people to make their own choices and opportunities when realising new systems, particularly around education and health. “The world of imagination is boundless” and I can’t wait to see what Afrofuturism creates ??
