?? Did you know that less than 5% of residential food waste is composted in the U.S.? ?? Despite the significant benefits—reduced greenhouse gas emissions and decreased reliance on fertilizers and pesticides—composting is still not as common as #recycling. States, municipalities, and private companies are striving to change this, offering more at-home composting options, curbside bins, drop-off locations, and private food waste services. However, we still have a long way to go. The infrastructure for composting is decades behind recycling, and national legislative efforts have yet to catch up.

Today is Learn About Composting Day! Do you know about composting? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, composting is a controlled, aerobic (oxygen-required) process that converts organic materials into a nutrient-rich, biologically-stable soil amendment or mulch through natural decomposition. Basically, it’s turning refuse into soil! Composting is a big part of SSP America’s efforts to reduce food waste and, as of 2023, 100% of our central kitchens compost all of their food waste. We follow a best practice ‘food waste hierarchy’ that includes prevention, redistribution, recycling and composting, recovery, and disposal.

Every bite counts. Every scrap matters! ?? ?? ?? Saves Resources: Producing, transporting, and disposing of food uses water, energy, and labor. Preventing food waste conserves these precious resources! ?? ?? Reduces Emissions: Food waste in landfills generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Diversion and composting reduce these emissions significantly. ?? ?? Combats Climate Change: About 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions are due to food waste. Every scrap diverted from the landfill is a step towards a cooler planet. ?? ?? Slows Global Warming Potential: Over a 100-year period, methane is about 25-28 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere, making it significantly more potent per molecule. ?? ?? Hinders Feedback Loops: Methane emissions can trigger feedback loops that accelerate global warming, such as the release of more greenhouse gases from thawing permafrost. ?? ?? Saves Money: U.S. households throw away approximately $1,500 worth of food each year. Cutting down on food waste means more money in your pocket! ?? ?? Feeds More People: Redirecting just 15% of food waste in the U.S. could feed more than 25 million Americans every year. ?? ?? Supports Farmers: Efficient use of produce and products supports farmers and reduces the need for excess production, which can be costly and environmentally taxing. ?? ?? Protects Wildlife: Less food waste means less need for expansion into wild areas, preserving habitats for countless species. ?? ?? Encourages Innovation: The demand for food waste solutions spurs innovation in recycling technologies and sustainable practices. ?? ?? Builds Community: Community composting and collective food sharing programs strengthen community bonds and awareness around sustainability. ?? ?? Decreases Scarcity: Better food management helps reduce perceived scarcities and price spikes caused by wasteful practices. ??...anyone want to add to the list? #FoodWastePrevention #SustainableLiving #ZeroWaste
? In 2023, MMCA staff fostered innovative approaches to solving the state’s waste disposal crisis, awarding $4.5M in municipal Sustainable Materials Management Grants to pilot food scrap diversion programs, which have diverted over 1 million pounds of food waste and helped communities like #MiddletownCT implement the nation’s first “save-as-you-throw" organics co-collection program. #EarthWeek2024

According to Curbside Composter, “Food waste is the 2nd largest landfill contribution in the US, and nearly 1/3 of all food is wasted from farm to fork.” This local group helps fight this waste and serves the Madison area with composting buckets which consumers fill with their food scraps and are then picked up weekly by Curbside Composters to benefit farms across the area. How can you and I reduce both our consumption and waste? https://lnkd.in/gpMz_yhj
