As the search continues for our new director, we wanted to provide an update on some additional transitions. To better serve our mission and the UT research community, we are realigning our defense research support functions. While we will continue to support strategic pursuit of DOD-sponsored research, we will no longer be a standalone administrative unit within The Office of the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors (OVPR). To reflect these changes, we will be retiring the Defense Research Advancement name and DRA acronym. We are also transitioning away from social media. ?You can follow UT Austin Research for defense research news and announcements or email us at [email protected] to stay in touch and to continue receiving updates. In addition, several of our team members have shifted into new roles within OVPR. Research development support, as well as associated events and external engagements, are now part of the OVPR Research Development unit. ?Christopher Hossfeld and Will Flanagan have moved to this RD unit and a new director will be hired. Post-award financial reporting support?will be provided by the?Office of Sponsored Projects. Cynthia Steiner has moved to this unit.? Research Security?will be supported through the?Office of Research Support and Compliance.? Laura Klopfenstein will continue covering defense research announcements and stories as well as other research areas at UT as part of the OVPR Research Communications team. If you have any questions about these changes, please reach out to us at [email protected].

We're supporting those writing an European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant this week (hang in there!!), and covering important topics relevant for writing most grants. Let's talk about #feasibility, and related to that #risk mitigation, which are both major scoring areas in ERCs (and R01s!). If you're struggling with these sections, you are not alone! Feasibility = likelihood of success. And if you have solid plans for how to mitigate risk, of course you ?? your chance of success. Showing the grant panel and reviewers that you have thought carefully about risk, and have clear plans for what to do if things don't work out the way you hope (which they rarely do), will hugely increase your chances of getting funding. So, how do you do that? Most people include alternatives for when their experiments don't work (for technical reasons). This is important. But it's not enough. It's also important to include a plan for when the experiments do work but don't support the hypothesis/model. You need to acknowledge this possibility in your proposal, and state what that might mean. How do you do that? One solution we often use is to frame the experiments so that the results will always provide value/new knowledge even if they don't give you the result you were expecting. If you our help with feasibility on your grant proposal, consider reaching out to us ?? www.lifescienceeditors.com Scientists from underrepresented groups can get free help at: www.lifescienceeditors.org ?? Remember, admitting things might not work out is not a weakness. It's an inevitability of all scientific research. Importantly, being able to manage those inevitabilities effectively is a strength, and one you need to clearly demonstrate in your grant proposals.

?? Why Principal Investigators Should Always Read the Full Program Announcement?? As a Principal Investigator, your expertise is vital in driving groundbreaking research—but when it comes to securing funding, the details matter. Reading the full program announcement can make or break your proposal. Here’s why it’s essential: ? Clarifying Project Scope: The announcement helps you fully understand the sponsor’s expectations, ensuring your research aligns with their mission and priorities. ? Maximizing Your Proposal’s Impact: By diving into the specifics, you can tailor your project to meet the sponsor's key goals, increasing your chances of success. ? Avoiding Compliance Pitfalls: Small details, like formatting requirements or budget limits, are easy to miss but can lead to disqualification if overlooked. ? Identifying Strategic Advantages: You may uncover opportunities for collaboration, additional funding, or areas where your research is uniquely positioned to stand out. Taking the time to read every line could be the difference between a good proposal and a funded one! #PrincipalInvestigator #GrantSuccess #ResearchFunding #ProposalCompliance #FundingOpportunities

On April 4, 2024, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued final changes to 2 CFR 200, “Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards” (Uniform Guidance). The Uniform Guidance sets forth the administrative requirements, cost principles, and audit requirements for federal awards to nonfederal entities. The final changes follow OMB’s proposed revision from fall 2023 and a subsequent public comment period. ?The changes will take effect on October 1, 2024. See our previous post, HTTPs://https://lnkd.in/e8F6mQqR an overview of the significant changes from the rewrite.? The OMB’s rewrite increased the de minimis indirect cost rate from 10 to 15 percent over modified total direct costs (MTDC) while still permitting an election of a lower rate. The rewrite also revised the definition of MTDC to increase the value of each subaward that can be included in MTDC from $25,000 to $50,000. The de minimis rate is the percentage of the MTDC that can be used by nongovernmental entities that do not have a negotiated indirect cost agreement.??Uniform Guidance Rewrite Pt. 2: Increase of De Minimis Rate | Berkeley Research Group (thinkbrg.com)

Spotted this quote about the importance of thinking time in scholarly research in a recent Nature editorial (25 July 2024). The undervaluing of thinking time means that investigators are less likely to create space for it among the many other activities that are valued differently. Yet, this lack of thinking space can have important consequences for their work. Some of the common ones that we see among investigators we work with are: 1. Feeling/falling behind on the literature. 2. Submitting grant proposals without having time to consider what's there (and what's not) to refine the ideas or plans, leading to... challenges... at review time 3. Lack of awareness/action to recalculate or terminate projects that are not delivering 4. Lack of awareness/action to initiate new projects to develop or maintain a project pipeline Ironically, all of this can result in scrambling to recover lost time or progress on the "more valuable" activities. A vicious cycle. What do you do to protect time for yourself to think? If you mentor more junior investigators, do you encourage them to create thinking time?
