From the battlefields of Afghanistan to the heart of Utah State University, Jacob Hunsaker’s journey is a testament to resilience, service, and a commitment to helping others. In 2010, as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army Reserve, Jacob faced the daunting task of searching for IEDs and roadside bombs. Amid the chaos, he recognized the importance of mental health, using talk therapy techniques with his team to help them cope with the intense challenges. This experience sparked a passion that led him back to Logan, Utah, where he pursued a career dedicated to both mental and physical well-being. Jacob earned his BA in Spanish (2013), a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy (2015), and later a BS in Nursing (2021) from USU, determined to integrate therapy with medical care. Balancing rigorous nursing preceptorships, a full-time job, and a growing family, he understands firsthand the sacrifices nursing students make. A scholarship during his last year helped him continue his journey, providing much-needed relief during financially difficult times. Inspired by Jacob’s story, USU students established the Jacob Hunsaker Hardship Nursing Fund to support those facing similar struggles. The fund is part of USU’s AggieFunded program, aimed at helping nursing students navigate the demanding coursework and clinical hours. Jacob, honored by this recognition, remains committed to giving back—through his practice, River Hollow Mental Health, where he mentors students and offers free mental health support to the community. Now pursuing a doctorate in nursing practice in psychiatric and mental health, Jacob is dedicated to providing holistic care throughout patients’ lives. His journey reminds us all of the power of compassion and the importance of supporting those who serve our communities. #AggieImpact https://lnkd.in/g_WFVtXJ

This is personal. I can’t wait to watch this film. Not just because it is significant for the future of healthcare, which it is. But also because it is deeply personal to my journey to becoming a nurse. I had to fight for my life to get through nursing school. Literally. After my first semester of becoming a Nurse Practitioner, through the long clinical hours, studying, exams, repeatedly getting called the N-word by classmates, and being told to “work slave” by a preceptor while I stood providing care to a patient, I became increasingly suicidal. During that first winter break, I remember not thinking I would make it to my second semester. My love for my young son and dedication to my people, the reason I pursued nursing, kept me going long enough to seek care. During that break, I started on an anti-depressant, a decision that I struggled with immensely.?But that anti-depressant (prescribed by a Black Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner) helped to save my life. The other life-saving intervention? Community. When I returned in the Spring I went on to start The Students for Racial Justice in Healthcare. We would do everything from listen to each other vent and have potlucks, to get entire positions created at the institute to address the rampant racism pervasive in nursing programs. We would swap stories, and share tips on what worked and what didn’t. Hold vigils for those gone too soon from the deadly effects of systemic racism, and organize walkouts when necessary. We would babysit for each other, dance together, laugh together, cry together. In a lot of ways, it was the first glimpse into what we are building at Togather This is the first time I am sharing this experience and battle with suicidal ideation so openly. It is uncomfortable, but I do so not just because it is #mentalhealthmonth and #nursesweek, but because as a profession I know we can and must do better. But we won’t if we don’t even talk about what the problems are and where the root of them are coming from. So thank you SHIFT Nursing and every Nurse featured in this film for being exceptional leaders. For helping show me and countless others just how much we can heal through the power of justice, collective work, and the uniquely positioned role of a Nurse. -- Head to the Everybody's Work website for more info, link in comments-- #healthequity #nursingschool #systemicracism #blackwomen #nursesonlinkedin #healthcareonlinkedin ?? New research identifies key elements for advanced trauma nursing education A new study published in the Journal of Trauma Nursing used a modified Delphi approach to determine consensus-based priorities for advanced trauma nursing education for emergency department nurses. Key findings: Critical thinking/clinical judgment was ranked as the top priority Assessment/reassessment and early recognition of trauma were also highly ranked Other important elements included communication, care for specialty populations, psychological needs of the team, and rural ED needs The study suggests advanced trauma education should provide foundational elements of critical thinking, pathophysiology, assessment, and systems thinking while accounting for differences in location and resources. This research helps define priorities for developing more advanced trauma education to improve emergency nursing care and patient outcomes. #STN #JTN https://ow.ly/Y0J150SxgVn

??Finding Your Passion in Nursing: My Journey?? When I started my nursing studies, like many of us, I was unsure of which path to take. Nursing is such a vast field, with so many areas to explore, that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But here's the thing: it's okay to start out feeling confused. During my second year, I found myself drawn to community health nursing. There was something about being out in the community, making a tangible difference in people's lives, that sparked a passion in me. I knew I had found something special. But the journey didn’t stop there. As I continued my studies, I discovered the world of mental health nursing. This field didn’t just captivate me; it led me on a journey of self-discovery. I realized that mental health is not just about treating others, but also about understanding yourself, your own strengths, and your own challenges. It was in this space that I truly found my calling. So, if you're still trying to figure out your own path, take heart. It’s normal to start out uncertain. But if you stay open and pay attention to what excites you, you’ll find your area of interest. And when you do, it will all be worth it. ?? #NursingJourney #FindYourPassion #MentalHealthNursing #CommunityHealth

Nurse | Nonprofit founder | Community builder | Digital Storyteller | Documentarian | Writer | hija & friend. ????
??In nursing school, I was your typical doe eyed, naive, 19 year old, hopeful and excited by the prospect of caring for people in the way that nurses do. Throughout my training, I witnessed moments that forced me to think deeper about my role & the constraints of circumstances outside of my control in providing care to patients. These moments compounded into a sense of disillusionment towards my profession & healthcare as a whole. In the weeks after I graduated nursing school, I experienced a traumatic event that pushed me towards seeking mental health support for the first time. I had access to EAP, through my employer as a newborn hearing screener & decided to go to therapy for the first time. Though I wasn’t experiencing crisis symptoms, I wanted to prophylactically support my mental health in advance of experiencing an event that I wouldn’t be able to cope with in the clinical setting. I believe this decision making is what saved my life later on in my career, when I experienced compounded layers of burnout, moral distress & numbness towards my role. Now, 6 years later, I am the co-founder of an org that supports healthcare workers through what they go through. Don't Clock Out was started after a nurse left their shift & didn’t come back. We are part of a growing community of healthcare workers who have decided that we deserve better within this system that only takes. full reflection on why I went to therapy after nursing school is in my substack newsletter along with dates for our May webinars on Moral Distress & Active Hope in healthcare ?? https://lnkd.in/gk4Yv6kk donate to support our work ??: https://lnkd.in/gh4sTrpk

Supporting Student Mental Health in Nursing: A Crucial Step Towards Success As we continue to train the next generation of nurses, it’s essential to recognize that the mental health of nursing students is just as important as their academic success. The stress of rigorous coursework, clinical hours, and the emotional challenges of patient care can take a significant toll on mental well-being. It’s vital that we, as educators, mentors, and healthcare professionals, create a supportive environment that encourages open discussions about mental health. This means providing access to resources, promoting self-care practices, and fostering a culture where asking for help is seen as a strength, not a weakness. By prioritizing mental health, we are not only supporting the future of healthcare but also ensuring that our nursing students graduate resilient, compassionate, and prepared to face the challenges of the profession with strength and empathy. #NursingEducation #StudentMentalHealth #NurseWellness #FutureNurses #MentalHealthMatters

Celebrating Nursing Innovation Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow 1 in 5 women has a history of childhood maltreatment (physical sexual, emotional abuse and/or neglect). Survivor Moms’ Companion (SMC) was co-created by Julia Seng, a Nurse Midwife, and Mickey Sperlich, a Social Worker, both whom researched how stress and trauma impacted women’s childbearing and postpartum experiences. They saw the need for a psychoeducational program to help support women with a history of childhood maltreatment and other trauma so that these women could break the cycles of abuse and psychiatric vulnerability in their lives, and that of their children. They have also created a non-profit, called Growing Forward Together, which houses the Survivor Moms’ Companion Program, and which intends to be a place where other trauma-specific educational programs can live. Nurses are always problem solving and then saying, "It's no big deal, I am just a nurse". How many unclaimed innovative nursing thoughts exist???? It's good for entrepreneurship as well as healthcare systems. ANOTHER reason why the outdated structural concept of including nursing services in the room fee needs to change! #nurses #nursesonlinkedin #commissionfornursereimbursement #bethechangethatyouwanttoseeintheworld #nursingishealthcare #everyoneneedshealthcare #everyoneknowsanurse #Ana #innovation
