Thank you UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) for the opportunity to discuss why in 2025 the U.S.-Mexico border will be a top issue in the political agenda. My two cents: 1) What happens at the border will be of interest beyond domestic politics and U.S.-Mexico relations. Far-right governments in Europe may look at the U.S. playbook for ideas. 2) We need improved border metrics. Border security and efficiency is not truly measured through arrests and seizures. #Mexico #US #border #security

While the challenges are undoubtedly tangible, the solutions are equally apparent - collaboration and partnership is increasingly vital if we wish to shore up the resilience of our networks. In a world where fates are evermore intertwined, no one country can do it all on their own.

Thoughts on the #QUAD leaders joint statement from this weekend's meeting | ?? Broad ranging, a notable absence of specific condemnation of the #PRC which appears odd, although their aggressive activities & behaviour are clearly at the forefront of the statement. ?? Good to see North Korea's actions specifically called out. Whilst China's action in the region are of significant concern, there is often a glossing over of other key flashpoints, including North Korea. ?? A few specific points from a maritim lens: The Quad reaffirmed its commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, with a strong focus on maritime security and rule of law. - A standard line, but still important ?? An acknowledgement that the #QUAD sees itself as supporting rather than replacing existing institutions that are increasingly dealing with maritime issues - including #IORA and the #PIF. ?? A report card on the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness #IPMDA (good because information on this project is hard to find) stating that it has been rolled out across the #FFA, SEA and the Indian #IFC - having 'helped' 'over two dozen countries access dark vessel maritime domain awareness data'. ?? Announcement of expansion of the #IPMDA project into a 'Maritime Initiative for Training in the Indo-Pacific (MAITRI)' - starting with India hosting an 'inaugural MAITRI workshop in 2025'. ?? #QUAD efforts also focus on improving the operational coordination between coastguards and navies, particularly in law enforcement and maritime crime deterrence through the 'launch a first-ever Quad-at-Sea Ship Observer Mission in 2025'. ?? Whilst i've seen many critics point out doesn't have a coastguard (keep an eye out for my ANU National Security College paper on why we should) Australia does undertake coastguard like functions in the Pacific like Operation Solania (https://lnkd.in/giiai5td) - closer coordination through #QUAD is positive. ?? The Quad reaffirmed UNCLOS as the legal framework governing maritime conduct and disputes & the significance of the 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea. ?? Good to see a clear focus on strengthening search and rescue operations, disaster response, and humanitarian aid capabilities further enhances maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region. ?? Overall - pretty standard joint statement from leaders hoping to ensure longevity to an initiative that all for have clearly had a focus on during their tenure. However, from a maritime security lens there is still a need to demonstrate the success of the #QUAD's maritime projects. https://lnkd.in/gZjUsdUK

It is imperative for the new U.S. administration to craft an effective and considered approach to U.S.-Pacific relations into 2025. Commentary by Kathryn Paik — January 27, 2025 Competition for resources, devastating effects of natural disasters, the race to lay critical undersea cables, and an increasingly divided and complex global environment—these factors will only continue to escalate in the coming years, making the Pacific ever more prominent on the global stage. For the United States, with its national security so intimately tied to the stability and independence of Pacific Island states, the strategic importance of the region will only continue to grow. A thoughtful and holistic approach to the U.S.-Pacific partnership in 2025 and beyond will be essential to ensure U.S. presence and influence – and strategic interests -remain steadfast in this critical region.
