Great to be back again serving as emcee at the 17th Annual Hearts of Texas Luncheon, honoring Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Randy Bowman, Community Partners of Dallas and the Lewisville ISD. Volunteerism transforms lives! Thanks to Volunteer Now CEO, Rachel Currie Triska, for inspiring her incredible team. Americans gave 4.1 billion hours of service to humanity as volunteers last year. There's nothing more impactful than making a difference in the lives of those who need it most. As I share in my keynote address: "Live your life as a go-getter, yet, forever share your life as a go-giver."

Norton Place, a supported living project for adults with learning difficulties, celebrated its 20th anniversary this week. Celebrations were held throughout the day with residents, staff, friends and family. Since opening its doors in 2004, it has been home to 10 residents, and is dedicated to enhancing their lives through a variety of activities and programs. The project helps residents engage with the community, pursue personal interests, and develop new skills whilst facilitating independent living. It's a regrettable step back that the University of Florida has decided to terminate all DEI positions. Our nation is in the throes of intense polarization, we need actions that bridge gaps, not widen them. We see people of color grappling with an unequal playing field when it comes to access to capital, education, and job opportunities. And this incident serves as a stark reminder about the urgency to bolster our community. This situation strongly underscores the obligation we have to fortify our community by rallying behind our local Black-Owned companies. The moment has arrived for us to pool our resources into our people, our communities and our businesses. Driven to help create more equitable pathways for young people to have a future they are proud of.
Yesterday was my first opportunity to attend the Illinois Education and Career Success Network annual conference. The theme - Awareness to Action - resonated throughout the day and left me feeling even more energized to create more equitable postsecondary pathways for young people. A few thoughts that are sticking with me: 1. “We’re asking students the wrong questions”. In a session focused on leveraging state frameworks like PaCE, I was validated when thinking about how important it is to put the idea of “what/who do you want to be…” in front of students versus leading advising conversations with thoughts simply about what college students want to attend. 2. “We need to shift the burden from the students to the system”. In multiple sessions, this thought came through. Simply by being a part of an unjust system means you have the proximity and power to play a role in fixing that system so that it better supports the students and families it is meant to serve. All of this has me even more excited to be a part of an organization like OneGoal that is focused on leading the movement to transform postsecondary advising and support. Onward!
