It was my pleasure discussing how to recognize dementia versus normal aging to Capital Healthy Living seniors. The participants were given tools for maintaining a healthy brain. #community #memory #communityeducation #qualityoflife #cognitivehealth #healthyliving #brain #brainhealth #healthy #minddiet #physicalactivity #cognitiveexercises #socialconnections #healthyeating
Shout out to Janine Santora nurse practitioner in neurology who did a fabulous job explaining the different types of dementia and Alzheimer’s to our Capital Healthy Living seniors! All the seniors went home armed with a packet of valuable information. Thank you to Sally Haupin and Maureen Kaelblein for putting together another great program and organizing transportation and lunch for all our members. Chrissi Peyton, MSN, RN, AMB-BC David Dafilou

?? Simple, everyday conversations about #AgedCare residents’ strengths, values, and past experiences can promote #cognitive #health and #wellbeing.
One big concern for me when my nan entered residential aged care was the social isolation that can come with such a big life shift. So we decided to interview 96 residents in aged care homes across NSW about their networks, quality of life and cognition and found feeling ?connected? with friends and family is crucial at this life stage, perhaps even more so than participating in all the recreational activities, especially when it comes to maintaining cognition ??. Our research, published in BMC Geriatrics, points to the value of happenstance, natural interactions in aged care homes; having a chat in the hallway ??, during personal care ??, and even phone calls ?? and visits from family are super important ??????. I am excited to share that our recent article in the Spring Issue of Aged Care Today suggests a good place to start building meaningful connections in aged care could be to initiate conversations that focus on the strengths ?? and finding the values ?? that are unique to each person and adopt this into recreational activity planning. Christopher Lyon responded to two Canadian authors Beuthin Rosanne and Anne Bruce who largely lauded the positive experiences of some Canadian #MAID #euthanasia providers in the journal Death Studies, which they frame as experiences of "human connection", evoking feelings of "conviction, courage, compassion, and intimacy". I highly recommend reading the full exchange, with response to the article by Christopher Lyon, then a response by the authors, then another response by Lyon. Particularly also international colleagues will get a sense of the at times mesmerizing adulation of the practice in some Canadian publications. Lyon points to some troubling issues, including lack of clear statement of conflict of interests, failure to discuss broader context and concerns, and methodological issues. He concludes : "Beuthin and Bruce serve not a carefully contextualized piece of narrative-hermeneutic research but instead a transcript of a self-referential conversation between a MAID coordinator, a sympathetic nursing professor, and some of their more active provider colleagues who share complimentary and complementary views of the experience of taking lives.?Indeed, in the hermeneutic and broader norms of scholarship, the publication of a text is an invitation to interpretations by others outside “the narrowness” of the “vision, prejudices, and focus” of those who produced it." Instead of being reassured by the authors' analysis, he rightly suggests: "their work draws attention to the privileged position of [#euthanasia #MAID] providers... As such, it is entirely appropriate to critically examine how MAID practitioners characterize their work, and how it is portrayed by others."
What should we make of Medical Assistance in Dying providers' 'lived experience'?

Please read Jocelyn Cohen’s published piece in Pediatric Research about aging with #CP. In her words: "Adults with CP have always had to contend with the novel ways our bodies interact and intersect with what medicine knows and society expects. As we navigate each decade, we need researchers and clinicians to be medical allies — people who make it their mission to ask the deeper questions, ?nd the answers, and collaborate to ensure that the answers make their way to everyone with cerebral palsy and the people who treat us. People who are open, understanding, and empathetic, embracing the fact everything that happens to any person as they mature, live, and age will also happen to people with cerebral palsy."
We’re proud to celebrate our very own Jocelyn Cohen's incredible accomplishment! She recently shared her powerful personal journey of living with cerebral palsy through the decades in a thought-provoking article published by Pediatric Research. Her story offers invaluable insight into the evolving landscape of care, treatment, and societal perceptions surrounding CP — and highlights the importance of continued research to improve outcomes and quality of life for people with CP. ?? Please join us in congratulating Jocelyn for this well-deserved recognition and for using her voice to inspire change and understanding. ?? Heart Failure (HF) affects over 6.7 million Americans, which often develops with aging. People with HF are twice as likely to experience mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia as those without heart conditions. Associate professor at the Indiana University School of Nursing, Miyeon Jung, is pioneering innovative ways to address the cognitive dysfunction often experienced by people living with HF.
